Report (by Rod Purves):

After a big loss last week, the Uni 3's travelled out to the land of Chocolate (Cadbury No 1) to take on (and hopefully exorcise) the Demons. Earlier in the year we played out an exciting game, with the Lions chasing down over 200 inside 40 oves, so we knew we were in for a tough contest.

Unfortunately the Jubb boys were unable to play, so Heve-dog made a welcome return to his club, and Rocket got his bundy drinking buddy Mark Goodman to come along for a bash, a new ball bowler in the STCL 1st grade competition and middle order batsman (but having a year off this year).

Thankfully, the junior cricketers playing before us finished at a decent time, so we were able to go through our normal leisurely warm ups - with only 9 players! A quick phonecall or 2 were made, with Hicks on the way after snoozing in, but Ash Winter nowhere to be seen. Rocket won the toss and, surprisingly to his team, elected to bowl first - a brave move considering the lack of a team!

With 4 minutes before the start of play, Hicks turned up, but unfortunately we were not going to see Ash for the entire day, as he was uncontactable. This was going to be a challenge for the 3's, but one I was sure we'd be up for.

Stuey A and Darey shared the new pill again this week, and the Demons got off to a quick start with 11 off the first over! Stuey struck in the 3rd over, knocking down the timber with the score on 16. This bought a young batsman to the crease, so The Product started to bowl short (and 2 yards faster), and struck the little fella in the grill on his helmet. There was no blood, so there was also no sympathy from us!

This was the only early breakthrough though, as the opposing captain (and only decent batsman) was playing well, and the scoring rate was ticking along at just under 6 per over for the first 10. Twang, back from the Hutchins Tour of the Universe, and Rocket came on first change, ans started to slow the scoring rate. In the 16th over Rocket struck, getting an edge that was accpeted by Dogger, taking the gloves so Hicks could run around in the field and wake up! Next over, Twang found the edge of the opposing skipper, again taken by Heve-Dog, and we had 2 fresh batsman at the crease with the score 3/88 off 17. The very next over, Rocket found another edge, and the Dog man took catch 3 in the space of 13 balls, and we were back on top.

Gooders replaced Twang (1/15 off 4) who was fatigued after the cricket trip, and immediately bowled an immaculate line and length. Everything was yorker length and on off stump, and at drinks the Demons were 4/100. 3 overs after drinks, Rocket struck his 3rd blow, knocking the off stump out of the ground. Meanwhile Gooders was still annoying the crap out of the batsman by bowling deliveries they could only push for 1's (at best), and their good start degenerated into an innings fit for a test match. Even the plovers got bored and flew away!

With the 1st ball of his last over, Rocket (4/27 off 8) produced another blow, as a thigh high full toss heading down legside was hit straight down the throat of Gooders at fine leg - you beauty! Straight ftom the Girth book of bowling!. North Hobart 6/117 from 26, and really starting to struggle. Girth replaced Rocket, and struck in his first over. Yep, you guessed it, a half tracker smashed straight to the waiting hands of Chicka at mid wicket! Only a few balls later, Gooders snared a run out, as the batsman flicked a ball to him at short fine leg and called for the single, to see his partner well out of his ground.

Next over, Gooders (1/23 off 8) uprooted off stump, and North were 9/123. Some tight bowling continued, with the batsman pushing 1's here and there, and with the reintroduction of Stuey (2/30 off 6.4) he grabbed the last wicket to see the Demons all bowled out for 141. At the change of innings though there was confusion about the score, but it was soon established that the North Hobart players added legbyes to the bowlers stats, but this was sorted out and 142 was the agreed target.

Chicka and Fenna continued their partnership as opening batsmen, and continued the tradition of starting well. Chicka combined some well timed drives with brutal pull shots (only Paul Mac would hit the ball harder in 3's), while Fenna pushed 1's and 2's and played his role to perfection, and we moved to 36 from the first 6 overs. This trend continued until the 14th over, when Fenna was caught and bowled for 16 with the score on 57. Hicks was promoted up to number 3, and he and Chicka took us safely to drinks, with the score 1/83. Not much different happened after the drinks break really, only Chicka smashing a 6 over mid wicket, and later brining up his 3 half century of the year, and the runs ticking along at a good rate. Hicks built himself a good innings, and unleashed with a couple of boundaries. Unfortunately, trying to hit a 6 to knock up the winning runs, Hicks was dismissed for 27, and the team score on 137. Heve-dog walked out at number 4, and only faced about 3 balls, as Chicka hit 2 boundaries off the next over to see us get the runs with 8 wickets and 8.1 overs to go! Chicka remained 71 not out, and went past 350 runs for the season - I'm glad he can't play on Saturdays!

A great win by the Uni boys. Bowling was better, but we still gave away 38 extras! Batting was great - couldn't fault it today. Fielding was much improved, although a few errors early could have been avoided. Only having 10 players was poor, but we battled hard and everyone contributed well. Special mention must also go to Stuey A for his knowledge of tv shows, and I hope he enjoyed the premiere of Desparate Housewives, and managed to get his hands on the Teri Hatcher movie he's been looking for..........
