Report (by Rod Purves):

(Day 1). Hooray for the roster! Finally a 2 day game at home (no, not Fergusson Park - Uni Oval). The Uni 3's were full of excitement at the prospect of playing the Roos on our home turf, and possibly savouring the taste of a world famous TUCC busted sav. The 1st grade boys were also at the ground to watch the ING final on the big screen, so it was nice to have the occasional bit of support throughout the day.

Another strong list of players assembled for the game, but unfortunately the TCA wouldn't let China Paine play so Dogga Hevey got the call up to take his spot. The sun was shining, the grass was green, and the pitch was freakin' hard, so it wasn't hard to know what decision to make at the toss of the coin!

Clarence lost Weggie to the 2's, but the ever imposing Mick Peters was in their lineup, so they actually had a chance of scoring over 150 for a change. Rocket joined the opposing skipper and 2 umpires (T Tonks and M Gillard - I know Tonksy will check this report so I thought I should give him a mention) for the toss, and was back in form, calling correctly and choosing to bat.

Chicka and Fenna opened up as usual, but it wasn't long before Fenna was back in the sheds. Johnno (the opposing captain) opened the bowling with his leggies, much to the amusement of the Uni lads back in the rooms, but had Fents caught and bowled off his 2nd ball! Simbok joined Chicka out in the middle and our 2 leading run scorers for the season set about rebuilding the innings.

Not much happened in the first 17 overs, as Chicka and Simbok took the score to 49 through batting sensibly and trying nothing extravagant. However the next over was going to change the course of the game. Johnno was still bowling, and his 1st ball was a half tracker that Chicka smashed for 4. Next ball, same thing. The 3rd was a repeat of the first 2, and then ball number 4 was again a carbon copy! Ball number 5 - de ja vu! Except this time the ball rolled up into the hedge and they spent a couple of minutes trying to get it out. Unfortunately the break disrupted Chickas' concentration, as he only managed to hit the last ball, another half tracker, straight along the ground to cover.

After the onslaught a few bowling changes were made, but they still couldn't penetrate the defences of Chicka and Simbok, and the score passed 100 in the 29th over, with Chicka having passed 50 along the way (note: 36 of his first 42 runs came from boundaries!). About half an hour before tea the Roos finally had some success - Simbok out for a well made 49. Please note that he was actually dismissed, and i did not declare on him! This ended a partnership of 132 from 33 overs.

Hicks was given the nod at number 4 and joined his good mate at the crease, and these 2 saw us safely to tea, with the score 2/168 from 42 overs, with Chicka smashing a 6 in the 2nd last over to take him into the 90's Unfortunately there was no busted savs to enjoy, which was a disappointment to a few people, but we soldiered on anyway.

A few overs after the resumption of play Chicka pulled a ball for 4 to bring up a magnificent century. The last one I saw him make cost me 2 bottles of scotch - sorry mate, nothing this time! Not long after that though, with the score on 194, Chicka was caught behind for 108, taking his season tally of runs to 469.

Stevo made the walk out to the middle, and 9 runs later Hicks was making the trek back, caught behind for and entertaining 27 that included a reverse sweep (caught on camera - nice work!!!). Hevey entered and left quickly, and we were now 5/210 in the 54th over.

Streety took up his customary role at number 7 (possibly a spot too low, but his best innings are played here) and the young fella showed some aggression that we haven't really seen before. Stevo looked like he was back in touch too, and they kept the score ticking over at 3.5 an over until Streety was dismissed for 19 with the score on 241. Gooders wandered out to join Stevo, and these 2 started to get the scoring rate climbing again in the anticipation of a declaration by the skipper. They put on 50 in only 8 overs before Rocket called them off with the score 6/291 from 71, Stevo not out 32 and Gooders not out 31.

This left time for 6 overs at the Roos. Rocket and Stuey took the new ball, but couldn't do any damage, as Johnno and Mick held on to be 0/13 off 7.

(Day 2). We're having busted savs for tea!!!!! You bloody beauty! Steve Kerr was on hand today to tend to the canteen, and the savs were on the hot plate before the start of play to ensure they were appropriately skinless by tea! Fenna was stuffed from the Tassie Devils footy challenge the day before, and Stuey A had his brother's wedding the night before, so there were a few boys under the weather for the game.

Stuey and Rocket continued with the new ball, and kept the scoring tight, with the Roos travelling along at less than 3 per over. Mick was in form, but Johnno wasn't hurting us much, so the more time he was on strike the better! Rocket struck the first blow, getting a ball to move away from Johnno slightly and finding the edge, with the ever reliable hands of Hicks snaring the catch.

Not much happened for a while, as the number 3 looked to survive at one end while Mick tried to do all the scoring at the other. Stuey and Rocket finished their spells, and Twang and Gooders took over. Gooders was his ever miserly self, while Twang was unlucky to be bowling a bit too well to find the edge. Drinks were soon taken, and the Roos were 1/67 from 27, needing a further 225 from a minimum 52 overs.

Not long after the break Gooders made a breakthrough, bowling the number 3 with the score on 81. This bought Ricey to the crease, an always popular opponent, and we set about getting stuck into their tail. Mick and Ricey put on 31 runs from 7 overs before the reintroduction of Stuey paid BIG dividends. Mick Peters decided to dance down the wicket at him, but couldn't handle the short ball as he would have liked, as his soft little cut was hit straight to Simbok at gully, who held the easy chance. Now the game had changed to being far in our favour, with little resistance expected now their best batsman had gone.

Chicka, the new number 1 spinner for the Uni 3's, was bought into the attack for only the 2nd time this year (he bowled 2 balls in an earlier game!) and he soon had Ricey caught by Dogga at 1st slip. In his next over Chicka struck again, taking a great caught and bowled diving low and forward at ankle height. 5/118 soon became 6/124 with Chicka enticing a drive from a well flighted delivery, with the skied catch being well held by Gooders at mid off.

The part time spin had soon netted 3/6 from 4, but he wasn't to be done with yet!. In his next over wicket number 4 was snared, with the batsman out LBW dead in front of the stumps. It was at about this time that Simbok started having a word in Rockets ear about getting a bowl after taking 2/4 for Hutchins the previous day. He was, of course, completely ignored, as the skipper came into the attack himself to replace Stuey.

Not long after his introduction Rocket grabbed his 2nd wicket and hitting the Vodafone stumps. Tea was taken not long after, even though the Roos only had 1 wicket left due to having only 10 players. BUSTED SAVS HERE WE COME! The lads hurried off the ground and soon enjoyed the famous delicacy of a TUCC busted sav, much to the confusion and bemusement of Steve Kerr.

Upon resuming Simbok marked out his run up and had his cap handed to the umpire, but was soon walking back to gully muttering something about the skipper not having much money and being poor............ Chicka tried hard for his 5th wicket, but couldn't get it no matter how hard he tried, as Rocket finished off the innings by again hitting the sponsored woodwork. Well bowled to Chicka for his 4/9 from 8 overs! Special mention in the field must go to Streety, who was struck in the side of the head by a full blooded pull shot while at short mid-wicket and shook it off like he'd been stung my a mosquito! It's still a dropped catch though Streety, so you owe Chicka for that!

The follow on was not enforced so a few guys could get some practice. Stevo and Streety opened, but with his ears still ringing, Streety was bowled for 5. Hicks batted at 3, and he and Stevo smashed the Roos bowling attack to all parts of the ground. Our opponents gave everyone except the wicketkeeper a bowl, so there were plenty of bad balls from bad bowlers to be smashed to the fence. Hicks, who hit 10 boundaries in his first 45 runs, knocked up his first 50 for Uni, having often fallen short in the 40's. Stevo bought up his 50 with a pull over mid wicket for 6, but was out soon after. It was great to see him back in form, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't get even better through the finals.

Chicka went out at number 4 and racked up 19 not out, while Hicks made it through to the end to remain 81 not out, as we finished with 2/173 from 28 overs. The highlight of his innings was definitely the reverse sweep for 4 from Johnno - an absolute classic, and hit bloody well! He also swept a couple of their regular pacemen too, so the crowd (Kibster, Huddo, Girth, and Lister) was kept well entertained!

The TUCC song was sung loud and proud back in the rooms, although we do need a bit of fine tuning in the latter stages!

A great win from the boys, with all of our batsmen getting a good hit over the 2 innings. Fielding was really good too, which will be the key to finals.

Simbok and Twang may not join us from now on due to school cricket commitments, so I'd like to say to both of them thanks for their outstanding inputs over the season (Simbok 266 runs @ 38, Twang 14 wickets @ 21.29), and I look forward to playing much more cricket with you in seasons to come.

The traditional clash against Kingborough at Kingston High School next week, so let's finish on a winning note and go into finals with full momentum behind us.
