Report (by Rod Purves):

For the last roster game of the 2004/05 season we faced up for the traditional yearly clash against an understrength Kingborough at Kingston High School. Great scheduling by the TCA of a 1 day game on a synthetic pitch the week before the 2 day semi final on turf..........

The result itself didn't mean anything for either ours or Kingboroughs ladder position, but a win to keep momentum heading into finals would be important, as well as securing more points towards our (hopefully) 1st Club Championship. Plus the game meant Heve Dog qualifies for finals! Plus Darey (7 overs), Twang (1 wicket & 2 overs), and Stuey (2 wickets) still needed to qualify for the bowling averages!

While the Uni boys completed there elaborate warm up routine (except Fenna who as 35 minutes late as usual), the Knights were happily ejoying having their team photo taken - obviously 6th place in 3rd grade means a lot to them! After the paparazzi had finished with them, the Knights captained joined Rocket and the 2 umpires for the toss, Rocket winning yet again and surprisingly, given his past record, deciding to bat.

Chicka and Stevo opened up, with Fenna wanting to drop down the order, but it wasn't long before they were split, as Chicka top edged an attempted pull shot and was caught by the wicketkeeper with the score on 9. 1 run later Stevo was adjudged LBW, and 2/10 of 3.1 was not the start we were after! Simbok and the amazingly in form Hicks then got together and consolidated the innings. Fortunately the Knights bowlers were giving away a run per over in wides, so the scoring rate was easily maintained between 3.5 - 4 runs per over.

After racing his way to 12 and then getting bogged down, Simbok was next to depart with the score on 60 in the 16th over. Heve Dog, fresh from his 3rd placing in the Blackmans Bay District Cricket Club A Grade Best & Fairest, entered the arena and looked in reasonable touch, hitting a couple of early boundaries. Unfortunately it didn't last long, as he was caught behind for 13 with our score on 76 in the 19th.

Gooders got the call up to number 6, but was dismissed early for the first time in his short TUCC career. 5/90 in the 23rd and Rocket was wondering how this could have been the same team that last game declared at 6/291 in the 1st innings and then scored 2/173 from 28 in the 2nd innings!

The Product, the greying veteran of the side, set about building the run rate and combined with Hicks, who had been batting well, for a cameo partnership of better than a run per ball. On 22 though, after belting a 6 over deep backward square leg the previous ball, Peter Senior (Darey) decided to try the same shot again, only to be bowled. The Knights gave him a fair send off, not seen in 3's for a while, but The Pensioner took it in his stride and wished them luck for next week..........

Fenton, at number 8, joined Hicks and these 2 took the score to 152 before Hicks was dismissed for a solid 61 (7 boundaries). He has now scored 252 in his last 6 innings, with back to back 50's. and is in rare form that we all hope continues. Fenton departed not long after, as did Rocket, and it was left to Stuey and Twang to bat the last 5 overs. The Knights were behind in their over rate, so it was important to bat to 3:15 at least so we could get the benefit of penalty runs.

With the score on 180, Twang was out and our innings ended. Thankfully though the last 2 batsmen saw us past 3:15, so Kingborough were penalised 2 overs for slow bowling, so our score was revised to 192. Players then sped off in the hunt for Subway for lunch, and Simbok again reminded Rocket of his desires to bowl. Note: Steve Kerr kindly offered to deliver some savs from Kingborough for the boys, but the standard they maintain aren't up to ours - they don't bust and the skin stays on! Thanks anyway Steve!

After their feed (Stevo and Heve Dog would ALMOST rival Grubby for their quick eating abilities) we took to the field in the hope of gaining some early scalps. Stuey and The Grey Fox (Darey) shared the new pill, but some wayward bowling saw Kingborough race to 22 off 2 overs! We improved slightly, but we're still pretty much atrocious letting through 6 overthrows, as our opponents were 0/65 from 9 overs.

The Veteran struck the 1st blow, and possibly the most important, as he enduced a thick edge from Muzza (who was belting us everywhere) that screamed into the safe hands of Heve Dog at 2nd slip. From here we started to tighten the screws, as Twang relaced Stuey and bowled very tidily at only 3 runs per over, and the veteran completed his first spell of 7 overs - qualifying him for the averages!

Twang struck next with the score on 92 in the 19th over, and completed his first spell of 6 overs for 1/16. BHP (Gooders - the quiet achiever) and Rocket then combined to try and settle the scoring rate down. BHP snared his 1st wicket, being that of the Knights Director of Coaching Chris Gulline, courtesy of an edge through to Hicks. Not long after that, Rocket joined in on the action, also finding an edge that Hicks gratefully accepted (note: the skipper was going for 7 per over at this stage, so had to do something before dragging himself!). 4/126 in the 25th, and the Knights would still consider themselves on top, with 15.3 overs to score only 65 runs.

With the score on 144, BHP struck a big blow to the Knights chances as he bowled the opening batsman who was still there. 2 runs later, he snared his 3rd victim, taking an easy caught and bowled. Next ball should have been an LBW in hs favour, but the umpire must have felt sorry for the old age pensioner who wandered out to bat - he was probably missing an important bingo game for this!

Rocket delivered an important blow with the score on 149 - their captain put caught behind. He smashed 36 against us last game, and was the last of their recognised batsmen. BHP (3/31) and Rocket (2/36) finished their alloted overs, and Darey (i've made enough grey/old jokes) came back on to bowl his last over, bowling his bingo partner (well, maybe i wasn't quite done!). The number 9 and 10 batsmen, requiring 42 off 48 balls, frustrated us for a 23 run partnership before Twang (2/26) took his 16th wicket of the year. 4 runs later Stuey finished the game off, having a catch taken by Chicka (who dropped a catch off the skipper that both Darey and Jubby could take) at midwicket, and the Knights were all out for 177.

In the rooms the lads sang the song (with the aid of copies of the words Rocket had provided) with much gusto. All we want to do is hear it twice more this season!

A win to end the season, but we were crap. Our score was flattering, as the Knights gave away 37 extras and another 12 penalty runs, and only 2 batsmen passed 20. Our bowlers were less than average too, with the exception of Gooders and Twang, as we bowled too wide and too short. Fielding was lethargic, and there were too few voices heard.

However, our roster season was one to be proud of. 10 wins (2 outrights), 2 losses, 1 draw, 1 washout, and 8 points clear on top of the ladder - a record that any side would gladly accept. However it means nothing if we don't back it up with 2 finals wins.

We bid farewell to Simbok and Twang due to Hutchins duties. We all wish them the best and hope they continue to play the excellent cricket like they have done all year. It's now our responsibility to reward them with the finals results they greatly deserve.

For the 3rd year in a row it's The Farnies at Farnie Land for the semi. Let's train hard this week, and play the semi final as it should be played - like there's no tomorrow.
