Report (by Rod Purves):

(Day 1). The start of the 2004/05 cricket season was held under ideal conditions at Cornelian Bay oval. The University 3's were a new and inexperienced outfit, welcoming 3 new players to the club - Joe Hoang, Ravi Kanakamedala, and Kieran Helm. Also, Matthew Dare was back at the club after going walkabout for the last 7 seasons or so.

The team went through its normal basic warmup, and we were lucky to have Grubby there in suport to hit balls to allow the old captain to run around and get his knees warmed up. Rod 'Sourav Ganguly' Purves was back to his form of last year, winning the toss and sending the Glenorchy Magpies in on a green, but hard pitch.

Rocket took the new ball as usual, but in the absence of Stuey A, he was partnered by Joe. The first few overs went by with little action, except for the many airswings by the batsmen whp thought they were playing baseball, until the 6th over when Joe got through the defence of the slogger and damaged the woodwork. A great start for the Lions debutant. Not to be outdone, Rocket got his first scalp in the 9th over, courtesy of a catch by 'Girth' Lambert. Shortly after, in the 11th over, Ash Winter held a catch at short cover off the skipper to dismiss Ricky Martin (seriously, that was his name! we hope he can sing cos he can't bat!), leaving the Magpies in trouble at 3/26. Joe decided to get back in on the action, and in the 14th over Ash held another one at short cover to have the batting side struggling at 4/30.

With his knees and back creaking, Rocket left the attack and brought in Darey, who bowled well in his first couple of overs, and at drinks the batting side was 4/46. With the first ball after drinks, Darey found an edge which was gratefully accepted by our new keeper Helmy. Next ball, another top edge was snavelled up by 'Inzy' Sim in gully, and Darey was on a hat-trick (and very much pumped!). The hat-trick ball was........... a complete jaffa! The batsman played a textbook forward defence, but was outdone by the late outswing and had his off stump rocked. Needless to say the Uni boys went completely ferral, and i'm sure there was a tear in the eye of Darey after his outstanding milestone.

Unfortunately the next hour went by with little success as Ravi and Girth entered the attack, as the batsman edged balls over, wide, and through fielders, as well as there being some half-chances put down, and after being 7/46 they consolidated to be 7/110 at tea. During the break we all got to check out the swarm of bees that had gathered on Helmys car, and wondered how the bloody hell he was going to be able to leave alive! Rocket and Joe came back into the attack after tea and wrapped up the tail within 5 overs to dismiss Glenorchy for 120, with the skipper ending up with 4/24 off 13, and a great Joe 3/38 off 15 on debut. Darey had 3/19 off 9.

Chicka and Fents opened the innings, but suffered a setback in the 4th over when Fents was caught behind for a blob. Next ball, Darey was adjudged LBW and we were struggling at 2/6. That became 3/9 when Chicka was given out LBW after being hit on the knee-roll after playing well forward........ and getting an inside edge. Ash and Hicks looked to consolidate, but unfortunately Ash fell for a trap at gully and was dismissed for 15 with the score on 27.

'Inzy' Sim joined Hicks at the crease, and they started to build a partnership through careful shot selection and good calling. With the score on 59 though, Inzy played down the wrong line and was bowled for a well compiled 21. A few overs later Hicks was caught in the deep for 13, and we were soon 7/67 with Helmy out caught behind off his glove. Rocket and Joe saw off the last few overs and took the score to 7/79 when stumps were pulled.

After a good start it ended up being a tough day at the office, so the last few batsman need to knuckle down and see what can be done next week.

(Day 2). Day 2 of the match against Glenorchy rolled around, and we were all happy to see that Helmy had made it home alive last week and not been stung to death by bees! Girth soon realised he had parked in the bee zone, and quickly moved his car as far away as possible. But enough about bees, let's talk cricket..........

Rocket and Joe resumed the Uni innings and provided some excitement from the start, with 3 chances being given in the first 3 overs, but luckily none were held by the fielders. However Rocket was soon given run out with the score on 84, still 38 runs short of first innings points (note: the GCC score was revised from 120 to 121). Ravi Joined Joe at the crease, and the pair played well, with Joe unleashing some great pull shots, while Ravi defended well at his end. After a barrage of appealing by the opposition, the umpires finger was raised with the score on 103, seeing Joe depart to a dodgy lbw for a well compiled 24. 2 balls later, Ravi was caught at cover and the innings had ended on 105, seeing us lose on 1st innings by 16 runs.

The skipper tried to encourage the troops, as there were still at least 58 overs left in the days play, and we knew their batting was pretty ordinary based upon last weeks effort, so some hard and tough cricket was required. Rocket and Joe took the new ball (sorry Smithy I felt obliged to use the spare new pill!) and in the 3rd over there was an amazing event. Let me set the scene: Rocket bowls, the batsman slices a skied drive high over cover, Girth Lambert running around from point as fast as his legs can take him, the calls of 'catch it' from team mates even though there's no way he's going to get anywhere near it (I was thinking about walking back to my bowling marker!), a desperate lunge from Girth as he falls/dives to his right with arm outstretched, and................ bloody hell, he's taken it! An absolute classic catch from Warnie Jr that would seriously rival any catch EVER taken by ANYONE in the history of the game. If you saw us go feral with Dareys hat-trick last week, then you should have seen us go off this time! A ticker-tape parade will be held shortly.....

Anyway, in the next over Joe knocked over the castle of Ricky Martin (yep, he gets a mention again!) and the Magpies were struggling at 2/6. Their number 3 again came out for a good time and not a long time, as he tried to dance like Fred Astaire and swing the bat like David Foster for a while. With the score on 33, Joe found the outside edge of the batsman with more swing than Austin Powers, and Chicka held on to a low catch to his left at 2nd slip, made more difficult by a diving Helmy, who obviously wanted to beat Girths classic. The number 9 who frustrated us the week before was promoted to number 5, and was soon met with 4 consecutive bouncers from Ravi (aka Knackers) who had been bought on to replace Joe. The short pitched barrage worked, as he was tentative getting on the front foot and played around a ball that uprooted leg stump. Tea was soon taken with Glenorchy on 4/50.

During the tea break 'Special K' turned up and mentioned that it should only take us 20 minutes to knock them over. With the first ball after resuming play, Ravi snared his 2nd wicket with a leading edge to Chicka at short mid wicket. Hicks was then bought into the attack to relieve a slightly injured Darey (who had previously taken over from Rocket). It paid almost immediate dividends, with Fents gladly accepting the edge at 1st slip. The next few overs consisted of nothing but batsmen trying to hit to the leg side, but unfortunately it worked for a while. With the score on 70, Darey was given a simple catch at mid off from the bowling of Knackers. Unfortunately he made a mess of it and put it down, but was able to redeem himself, as the batsmen set off for a run, and Darey's throw managed to beat the batsman to the keepers end and he was run out. Soon after, with the score still on 70, Simsy stood under a skied ball of Hicks, and 1 run later Ash accepted his 3rd catch at short cover for the game. 2 balls after that Helmy accepted an edge from Hicks, and Glenorchy had been bundled out for 71, with Ravi (3/12 off 9), Hicks (3/17 off 5.2), and Joe (2/16 off 8) the main destroyers.

Upon consultation with the umpires, Uni had somewhere around 30 overs left to bat, and to win outright we needed 88 runs. Chicka and Fents opened again, with Fents given the role of trying to push singles and bat through the innings. These 2 paired well, and kept the score around 3 an over. Fents nudged singles here, there and everywhere, while those who had not seen Chicka bat much before got to see him in trademark form, even unleashing a pull shot for 6 over square leg! With the score on 46, Chika was bowled for 27 by Ricky Martin, who was so excited we thought he was going to break out into a rendition of 'She Bangs'. Simmo joined Fents at the crease, and they ticked the scoreboard over until it was on 59, when Simmo was caught behind.

Ash was given a licence to have a go at anything short or wide, and took out Ravis old 'SS' bat out for the fun. While Fents continued to push the ball into gaps, Ash played some great attacking strokes, getting off the mark with a boundary, and hitting a 6 back over the bowlers head a few overs later. In the 28th over, with 4 overs remaining, Fents pushed the score to the required 88. We played out the next 2 balls, from which 5 more runs were scored, and stumps were then pulled, with the TUCC 3rds coming back from a first innings defeat to comprehensively win outright by 8 wickets, with Fents 30* and Ash 22*.

It was a great comeback win for the 3's, potentially the best i've played in at TUCC, and all players should be congratulated for putting in the effort to get us over the line. All players could be mentioned for highlights, but special mention should go to the debut of Joe Hoang with 24 runs and match figures of 5/54 off 23 overs.

There's still a lot of work to do, but it's great to grab 8 points early on and head into round 2 with confidence.
