Report (by Rod Purves):

The much anticipated Clash of the Titans took place on the 21st of November 2004, as Uni 3rds took on Lindisfarne over at Farnie Park. This was 1st v 2nd on the ladder, and recent history between the 2 teams suggested it would be an entertaining game, and the Lions wanted to put some semi final demons to rest with a victory.

The boys turned up pretty much on time and were greeted with a hard, but slightly green pitch. Tim "The Ladder" Steven was a welcome inclusion in the side, and it was great to have Darey and Hicks back too. Pre-game warmups were conducted at the obligatory leisurely pace, and The Ladder was pumped to only have to complete a lap around the pitch rather than a lap of the oval!

Rocket got back to his winning ways, and called correctly at the toss of the coin. The standard plan of sending the opposition in was employed, so the bowlers got warmed up and ready to get stuck into things.

The Sultans of Swing, Rocket and Stuey, assumed their normal new ball duties, and kept the bowling nice and tight through the early overs, as the batsmen left us think it was actually a 2 day game. Stuey struck the first blow in the 8th over with a ball that jumped a bit, and the was deflected by the batsmans hand onto the Vodafone woodwork behind him. The openers ended up bowling their 8 overs each straight, with Stuey returning 1/21, and Rocket 0/23. Both bowled well and were unlucky not to have picked up more wickets, with many plays and misses from the batsman, as the Farnies crept along to 1/48 off 16.

Twang Parker and everyone idol, Greeny, took over the bowling duties, and Greeny struck in his first over, finding an edge that was neatly taken by Hicks. 3 overs later Twang struck, with and edge that was snavelled up by Greeny, much to the annoyance of Chicka who was looking to get in on the action. Twang then struck in his next over, having a batsman play a rank shot and hitting a high catch that Hawry was happy to accept, with the Farnies now 4/70 in the 23rd over. During this time Greeny was able to keep things tight, and his figures were only ruined during this time by the skipper, who in chasing a ball to the boundary only managed to kick it over the line when about 2 feet out.......... Sorry mate!

A few balls later something strange happened - the non striker actually called his partner through for a single! However, the batsman was obviously carrying out the team plan of saying 'no' to the chance of any runs, so Hawry swooped and lobbed the ball back to Twang to complete the run out. 18 balls alter Nolly wrapped the pads of batsman, and pleaded emotionally to the umpire like he was singing 'what about me?', and the umpire raised his finger skywards in his appreciation of the performance. Lindisfarne were now 6 for 80 in the 26th over and looking in all sorts of trouble.

The G Force soon came to the wicket to send down some devastating leggies, but unfortunately some rain came down too, causing the ball to get slippery and make it hard for him to bowl. Having a catch dropped by Darey didn't help him out either (Darey - looks like fielding for both of us at training this week!). Twang also had some trouble in his last 2 overs, being taken for 18 runs after his first 6 overs only cost 21. This gave the Farnies some momentum, and they were able to lift the run rate to 4 per over.

Ash was introduced to try and stop the flow of runs, and was able to do so quite effectively, even chipping in with a wicket in the 2nd last over of the innings. Nolly bowled the final over of the innings, and the Farnies ended on 7/158. Greeny took the bowling honours with 2/17 off 7, and Twang 2/39 off 8.

The old firm of Hicks and Chicka opened up for us, and set about scoring at a comfortable rate. Hicks pushed 2's and 3's, while Chicka got sick of running and just decided to hit boundaries. Unfortunately, with the introduction of Gavin Shaw into the attack (a much more potent bowler than his TUCC counterpart!), he was dismissed LBW for 19 (4 boundaries) with the score on 43 in the 10th over.

The Ladder joined hicks at the crease and got off the mark with a boundary. After bowling 6 wides in 3 balls (1 went for 4), Shaw struck again with another LBW that saw Hicks leave the arena, eventhough he was batting 2 feet out of his crease and played forward..........

Our favourite idol and the ladder then set about building a steadying partnership, and did so successfully, with a display of crunching cover drives, flicks through square leg, and powerful cut shots. Stevo even played a couple of shots too!

After putting on a partnership of 65 in only 12.3 overs, Greeny was caught for 26. Ash then joined the ladder at the crease, but was soon joining the rest of us back on the boundary after hitting a simple caught and bowled chance back to the spinner. Darey was next to enter the field of play to bat us through to victory, but unfortunately Stevo was the next to leave after being stumped for a well made 45. Darey then followed suit 2 overs later, and the Farnie boys started getting excited as the Lions were now 6/144 from 32.1 overs.

Rocket walked out to join Hawry at the crease, and 15 runs were scored off the next 7 balls, with Rocket hitting 2 boundaries and a 2, the keeper letting through 4 byes, and the bowler bowling a wide (note: for those who can count, yes this was an over with 7 legitimate balls!).

With the scorers (Chicka and Hicks) agreeeing the target of 159 had been reached off 32 overs, the teams and umpires shook hands and entered their respective changerooms to pack up and go home.............. HOWEVER, the batting and the bowling in the scorebooks apparently didn't add up properly, with the bowling only giving us 158 runs, so the Farnies thought it would be funny to have to see us walk out and bat again and wouldn't 'give' us the result, so Hawry and Rocket quickly strapped on their gear and headed back out to the middle. Only one ball was bowled, as Hawry smashed the spinner back over his head for 4, and we got to walk off the field for the second time. Please note that Chicka and Hicks found where the error was, and the books were correct the first bloody time!

A well fought out win by the Uni 3rds. We were on top early but let things slip a little in the 2nd half, however a couple of strategy changes will help overcome this. Well batted to Stevo, Hicks, Greeny, and Chicka for their solid contributions at the top of the order, and well bowled to Greeny and Twang for their ability to take wickets through the middle overs.

We are now 8 points clear on top of the ladder after only 5 rounds, so let's keep the momentum going for as long as possible and push for a strong result against Clarence in the 2 day game next round.
