Report (by Rod Purves and Heath Chick):

(Day 1). On a glorious day for cricket the undefeated Uni 3's headed up to windy hill to take on Clarence at the Cross Roads paddock. Upon arriving at the ground Rocket received a call from Hicks saying that Hawry had gastro and was unable to play today (when Hicks arrived he showed Rocket the sms from Hawry to confirm the diagnosis)! After much fussing about and numerous phonecalls, Special K was enlisted as a sub-fielder for the day, and Hawry was still to be included a part of the playing 11.

Our leisurely warmups were once again conducted, and we welcomed Mike Bowman into the team for his first game with the TUCC Lions. The toss was conducted and Rocket got the call wrong for a change, and the Roos skipper elected to bat. It was at this point that Rocket wondered whether having a toss of the coin is worth the hassle, as we always choose to bowl and our opponents always choose to bat.

The sultans of swing shared the new ball as always and were on the spot early. Soon though they were joined by another sultan, the left handed opening batsman, who thought he would start swinging too, as he danced like Pauline Hanson, but swung like Babe Ruth, in despatching Rocket for 6 over deep mid on.

The Product came in to the attack in the 15th over, replacing his skipper (0/12 off 7). Pauline and Babe were back in action though, as 2 fours were hit through deep mid on. The first actually rolled under the fence behind the bushes, and Darey climbed under to get it - a bit tough for the bowler to have to retireve the ball himself! However the Product struck a blow in the 19th over, knocking over the stumps of the other opener with the score on 61 (I can't believe he scored 89* last week!).

Twang Parker, having replaced Stuey after 0/20 off 7, struck in the 22nd over - twice! He found a little edge, taken by Hicks, from Pauline who asked the umpire to "please explain" the decision, but was soon told to waltz off the ground. 2 balls later another edge from the opposing skipper, who looks remarkably like Tiny Tim (or Pixie Anne Wheatley as stated by K), which was comfortably taken by Girth, so he had to tip-toe is way back to the sheds.

The Product continued to bowl a great spell, intimidating both batsmen with some well directed bouncers. He was soon rewarded with a skied catch taken by Hicks in the 29th over, with the Roos now starting to struggle at 4/96. The G Force came on to bowl some fizzing/spinning/bouncing/drifting deliveries after Twang completed his spell of 2/34 off 7 overs, but could only manage a waist high full toss 3rd ball. That didn't matter though, as the batsman was crap and just managed to hit it to Rocket at mid off! Speaking of crap, and Rocket, the skipper came out with the ordinary call of "who dares wins" during an over of the Product, to back up his call of Greeny being "Universities Idol" of the week before.

In the next over the batsman struck a clean drive along the ground to K at mid on - and then proceeded to call for a run! Some confusion between the batters, and bouncer from K back to the Product at the bowlers end, saw another wicket fall. The debutant, Mike Bowman, was thrown the ball to replace the Product (2/26 off 9) to see what he can do, and struck with his first ball, hitting the batsman (not playing a shot) on the foot with a yorker and being given the lbw decision. The smile on his face grew bigger 2 balls later, as he rattled the stumps of the new batsman to have 2/0 off 3 balls! Not a bad debut really..........

G Force thought he'd better take a 2nd wicket so he could get his name in the paper, and did so via a catch to Wintz at short cover. A few annoying overs later Bowie did the job again, as he hit the timber work and the Roos were rolled for 122 off 40.1 overs. Bowling honours to Bowie with 3/7 off 4.1.

The Street Kid and Hicks opened the batting, but after a careful glide through gully for 4 off the 3rd ball of the innings, Streety drove the next to point. In the next over, Hicks played a similar late cut from the 1st ball for 4, then smashed a hook to the square leg boundary off the 2nd. Unfortunately the 3rd ball from the left handed opening bowler managed to sneak around his bat and front pad, and he was bowled. 2/12 off 1.3 - not the start we were after!

Simbok and the Product then set about stabilising the innings. Both got off the mark with boundaries, and continued to punish any bad balls. In fact, Darey hit 4 boundaries in his first 6 scoring shots, while Simbok had hit 4 boundaries before reaching 24! These 2 took the score to 72 in the 14th over until the Product was bowled by Tiny Tim for a well compiled 33 (6 boundaries). The Munt joined his fellow Hutchins counterpart out in the middle, and these to 17 year olds put on a brutal display of batting, even if it was noted by a senior team member that Ash has a good eye, but the batting technique of a cripple!

The partnership between these 2 reached 57 from 6 overs, until Munt skied a catch to the only fielder capable of getting a hand on it, and was caught, leaving the field after hitting 4 boundaries and one 6 in his score of 23! G Force was promoted to number 6 to cover for the absence of Hawry, and also because Chicka will replace Rocket next week, so the skipper chose not to bat so the better player could wield the willow.

These 2 continued to dominate the bowlers, with G even hitting a 6! It was only signalled 4 by the umpire (and recorded in the book as such), but we all know the truth G, so feel free to tell everyone about it! With the score on 199, Girth was dismissed for 22, after having put on 70 with Simmo in 11 overs. Stuey A was out 1 run later for a duck.

With Simbok on 92, and only a few minutes play left, we all thought he'd have a nervous week to reach his first 3rd grade century. However, he had other ideas! In the 2nd last over of the day, he struck a 2 and then played out 2 dot balls. Ball number 4 was despatched to the fence, and then ball number 5 was driven though covers and crossed the white line, getting Simbok to 102*. The boys in stand gave him the ovation that was deserving, although we were disappointed he didn't celebrate like Dizzy Gillespie. However, it was a chanceless century that is no doubt going to see him playing at a higher level in the not too distant future.

Twang was dismissed for a duck on the 4th ball of the 34th over to end the day, with Uni 7/210 and hoping for good weather next weekend to continue the domination and hopefully smash the Roos with an outright win.

Stay tuned for later developments as they occur..........

(Day 2). The uni boys ventured confidently to the Domain Crossroads for day 2 of their match with a lackluster Clarence side. After already gaining first innings points on day 1, we were keen to push for quick runs before going for the outright victory. Chicka came in to substitute for Rocket who was called up the grades, and came immediately to the wicket to join Simmo who was already sitting pretty on 102*.

The uni boys launched a blistering attack on the opposition with some lusty hitting, highlighted by a towering 6 down the ground by Chicka (well done to Hicks for repairing his trusty willow blade during the week!). The boys were scoring rapidly and put on a partnership of 65 in only 8.1 overs before Chicka was trapped in front for a belligerent 42 off only 30 balls. Simmo was the final man to go, trying to belt it out of the ground only to be caught on the boundary for a brilliant 121. At that point Chicka as stand-in skipper decided that we’d had enough batting…that and we were one batsman short anyway.

With a lead of 151 we were confident of rolling the opposition cheaply and gaining full points. Stuey was rapt to not have Rocket around so that he could finally bowl downwind, sharing the new ball duties with Twang Parker. Both of these guys bowled very well, making the highway of a pitch look like an instant minefield. Stuey grabbed the early breakthrough by rattling the stumps of the opener, and trapping their number 3 in front, to have them 2-37. Twang was then swung around to bowl at the other end, which paid instant dividends with 2 wickets in 2 balls, both bowled! Darey was brought into the attack and soon got in on the act with 2 wickets in the next over, one thanks to a sharp grab by the big hands of Simmo in the gully, to have the opposition reeling at 6-46!

A stubborn partnership then held us up for a little while, forcing the game into the final session. The spin whiz himself Sam Lambert made the breakthrough when he once again deceived the batsmen with a well flighted, drifting, dipping full toss (from now on simply referred to as the ‘toosra’) which was well snapped up by a sliding Hicks at wide mid-on. At the other end Mike Bowman was keeping things tight with his persistent line and length bowling, which was rewarded when he also rattled the timber to have Clarence 8-122, and still short of making us bat again. Stuey then jumped at the chance to improve his figures, happily cleaning up a helpless tail to dismiss Clarence for 131. Outright victory by an innings and 19 runs!

A great team effort by all the boys with contributions from most batsmen to support Simmo’s great knock, and all bowlers chipping in with wickets. To win outright after batting for only 42 overs, and being restricted to only 10 men is an excellent effort, no matter who the opponent is. This win sees us well clear at the top of the ladder, and with the final ladder position proving costly for us in previous years, it’s vital we don’t let slip the opportunity to finish number 1 and give ourselves the best chance of winning that elusive premiership.
