On glorious summers day the undefeated Uni 3's made the trek out to the Cadbury No 1 sports ground to take on the Glenorchy Magpies for the 2nd time this season. The Magpies have been the only team to take points from the Uni 3's so far, as they won on 1st innings when we defeated them outright in round 1. Perko made a welcome return to the University colours for the first time this season, and we were looking forward to seeing him send down some fiery deliveries, rather than having to face him in the nets! We were also happy to see that Snooksy had been included in the Magpies line up, as he provided us with great entertainment last season when he captained the Townies, so those who could remember him hoped he had lost none of his charm! What wasn't welcomed was the fact that the automatic flushing dunny looked like it hadn't been flushed for about a week, so the door to the toilets was kept well and truly closed! Also, the public dunnies in the carpark were out of toilet paper, but being a well prepared skipper meant that Rocket had a roll of bog paper in his cricket bag, complete with carictatures of Dumbo! Our warm ups were somewhat reduced as there was a junior game on before us, so our traditional lap around the pitch was postponed for this game, although in the heat it wasn't really necessary. Plus Perko said he'd be as mobile as a panther in a bear trap, so we didn't want to burn him out too soon. The smell of chocolate from the Cadbury factory was a welcoming scent, although we were lucky Grubby wasn't playing as he might have disappered and reduced us to 10 men! Rocket wandered over for the toss and again won it, sending the Magpies in, as is our customary plan. Perko took the new pill and provided the batsman with some extra heat just in case the blazing sun wasn't enough, while Stuey opened up at the other end. Some good bowling by these 2 was mixed with a number of short balls that were sent flying to the boundary, so the maggies got off to a quick start. In the 3rd over though, after being hit for boundary, Perko managed to find an inside edge from Egg and his castle was knocked over, with the score 1/21. Snooksy entered the arena and the boys couldn't wait to hear his Benaud like commentary while at the non-strikers end. Unfortunately more short balls were bowled and more boundaries resulted (except from Snooksy who was playing his own 2 day game), and the score moved along to 1/40 off 8. During this time we had a skied catch put down by Darey at mid-off from the bowling of Perko, but it was only Snooksy so the Product was obviously liking his commentary too much to see him leave. Twang took over from Perko, who was experiencing abdominal problems and holding his stomach like he was going to unleash yesterdays lunch. The 2nd ball of his 1st over produced an edge that was cleanly taken by Hicks, and the dashing opener was out. Twang continued to bowl and excellent line and length and batsmen continued to play and miss at him, and this slowed the scoring up. Stuey was rested and The Product came into the attack. After he and Rocket decided that after dropping the catch it wasn't going to be his day, The Product had a catch dropped of a no-ball. Not to end things there, he then had a skied catch missed by Chicka, as he had to look straight into the sun and was blinded, only to see the ball land about 5 feet away. He did manage to find the edge of Snooksy's bat though, and this time Chicka took a regulation catch at 1st slip, as Glenorchy were now 3/75 off 18 and Snooksy helped stem the flow of runs by scoring 17 in 15 overs! Girth entered the attack upon The Product (1/25 off 5) declaring himself shagged, and starting to bowl well from ball 1...... well, except for ball 1 (and 2) being legside wides. However, has was giving them flight and getting them to turn, and the batsman had very little idea, so it was a good sign. Twang finished his outstanding spell of 1/14 off 8, and should surely come into contention for higher honours after bowling a perfect line for his entire spell outside off stump, and was replaced by Rocket, who surprisingly only bowled 2 wides in his first over! However, the balls that went straight were barely scored from, so the run rate continued to dip to 3.5 per over. This prompted the batsmen to start trying to hit out, and after going for 17 of his first 4 overs, the G Force went for 18 off his next 2, and the rate got back to 4 per over. Rocket continued to plug away bowling annoyingly outside off stump and was rewarded with a wicket as a skied catch was very well taken by a diving Chicka, after thoughts ran through the skippers head of seeing it land between 3 players (including himself!). Perko (1/36 off 6) was reintroduced into the attack but only laster 2 overs, from which 21 runs were scored. Stuey A (0/48 off 7) replaced him for the last 2 at that end, and had 23 runs taken off those overs. Rocket (1/25 off 8) bowled out his allotment tidily, and the need for runs resulted in an easy run out by Chicka in the 39th over. From their full 40 overs Glenorchy had amassed a score of 5/185, which was going to be challenging but certainly not beyond us. Just as we walked off the ground, the sun went behind clouds, it dropped about 10 degrees, and we could see dark clouds rolling in. Great, just what we frickin' need! With the need for quick runs, Rocket was promoted to opener and partnered the always reliable Chicka at the crease. 8 runs were taken from the 1st over, and the batsmen thought it might be their day. Unfortunately, Chicka was out for 6 after sking a catch to mid on from the 3rd ball of the 2nd over. 3 balls later, Rocket was hit on the front foot with a yorker and departed lbw for 5, and the Uni boys were 2/16 off 2. Inzy and The Product steadied the ship for a few overs and kept the run rate at a healthy 7 per over, until Darey was out for 11. leaving us 3/45 from 7. Next over, Wintz departed for a quack and the Lions were struggling at 4/47 off 8. Inzy and Hickey looked like they were going to again steady things, but Inzy was out for 29 in the 11th over with the score on 59. The street kid and Hicks combined for a safe, rebuilding partnership, with blazing shots put away, and the focus was on 1's and 2's and avoiding risks. Unfortunately with the score on 78 Streety couldn't protect his castle and was bowled, and the entering G Force was soon out for duck just 3 runs later. At 7/81 off 18 it was almost over for us, and the team was praying that the dark clouds would come our way and bring the thunder and lightning we had been hearing and seeing with them, but they didn't come. Hicks and Stuey A combined for 9 overs to hold back the attacking Magpies, and got in some batting practice. With the score on 100, and in the space of 3 balls, both Stuey (15) and Hicks (17) were dismissed by 'the Git', leaving Twang and Perko to face the music. Perko asked for instructions from the skipper, and was told to bat for as long as he could. However, his new batting theory on giving the bowler a 'fake charge', because as a bowler he has no idea what to do, changed the skippers instructions to "uh, just have some fun". Just out of interest, the lightning that was about 6km away, courtesy of calculations by Mr Winter, during the innings provided us with some good viewing, although the discussion on helmet face grills attracting the lightning was slightly off-putting for the waiting batsmen! However the umpires obviously didn't think we were all in too much danger. But i digress.......... Perko's first ball was a slashing step away cover drive for 1, and it was dutifully cheered by his teammates. Twang was copping a barrage of bouncers, so he premeditated a short ball and stepped to the offside.......... great guess! A cracking pull was sent thundering into the boundary, but he was out to a skied drive the very next ball, and we were bowled out for a disappointing 108. 10 minutes after the last wicket fell, it started to rain - bloody great! A disappointing game for the Uni 3's. We bowled too short early to allow easy boundaries, and towards the end of the innings there were too many balls the batters could get underneath and swing through. Fielding wasn't up to our usual standard, except for Streety who was dynamite and almost pulled off a gem of a run out after a diving save at square leg. Batting was poor, as only 1 person got passed 20. We're still 1 game clear on top, and this was probably a loss we needed to have for a reality check. We play Kingborough this week, who are struggling this year, so let's work on the things that let us down, and go into the christmas break with a good win, and in a position to maintain top spot for the rest of the season. |
