Report: (by Steve Kerr)

It was a round of TCA cricket where the top four teams were playing the bottom four teams and the more learned scribe in the mainstream press nearly went as far as saying that the finalists would be decided by 6pm with three rounds in this truncated season still to go. But then again cricket is a funny game!

North Hobart were undefeated this season in both the Grade and Kooka comps (but they'd only played 2 of 6 after all)! Uni. had won a single game way back in between rainy Saturdays in November! Should be an easy result to predict? Last week's efforts with the bat (albeit in a 'dead' second innings) showed some glimmer of hope to the Uni. faithful at the ground.

Lockdog won the toss (or Dakin lost it actually) and Uni. opted for first use of the same strip as was used last week. Richie and Kingo opened and the runs flowed reasonably freely from the first over. Richie hit two glorious sixes before being adjudged (somewhat harshly?) for 38 off 39 balls. Lockdog was looking over the hedge at the side of the oval in anticipation of the ball heading there when in fact it was hitting his stumps and went for 2 but from there on, as could be judged by the number of batsmen listed above, it became a real team effort with everyone contributing but no-one carrying on.

Thommo added a brisk 24, Kingo, after a watchful innings of 19 off 67 (sorry Kingo - Reeks would find out eventually anyway) which held the early part of the innings together and Bakesy and Scooter put on the largest partnership in the innings before a comical run-out saw Scooter head back to the pavillion. Debutant (for the second week in a row) Greg Sharman added a sober 28 and Matty Lister a lower order 24 as well. The coaching staff had obviously read last week's match report and Beany was elevated to the dizzy heights of no. 10 and continued his fine run before holing out at long on!

The knowledgable bar staff at the clubrooms had predicted a score of 240 to win the game - the total of 236 had them a wee bit worried. A good bowling and fielding effort would be needed but, as that has been Uni.'s forte so far this season things were looking ok.

North lost two early wickets (including that of Tassie's Dighton) and things looked good. This brought together the Tassie skipper and the coach's son-in-law! Jose's 4th. over and a spilled chance by the Club' painter-in-residence at mid-on began to look costly. JD and Marsh put on 88 in just over an hour (with a few edges going just out of reach) before the introduction of Scooter to the crease brought immediate results. Discarding his paint brush for a while Beany caught Dakin (42 runs later) and then Marsh to have North struggling at 4-126 afetr 30 overs. The team looked as if they now beleived a win was on the cards and the intensity picked up after a lean spell.

Matty Lister entered the attack and bowled a really tight spell of 5 overs, 1-15, Scooter cliamed another couple caught in the deep (including a classic from Richie at deep square leg after having checked where the boundary was and ensuring he didn't fall over a young David Beckham) a smart run out and Jose then came back to clean bowl the last two. North had lost 7 for 50 and and the Uni. Ones made thier way back to the rooms and tried to remember the Club song.

Three games to go and still in with a chance of making the Finals (ten points from the next game should be a good start).

p.s. - Just checked the rosters - there are actually four games to go and the second is against the Bay et. al. The more learned scribe has today announced that the "final four was set in concrete". I would debate that assertion (mathematically at least) - time will tell. Betfair aren't here yet but someone must be offering 100-1 against Uni. Worth a few bob on today's performance I reckon!
