(Day 1). To have any chance of making the Finals a win (and preferably an outright) was must for the Uni. side against the Bay et. al. who were sitting on the bottom of the ladder. A distinct possibility - that was until Tassie capitulated to WA within three days allowing the Bay to add four of their State players to the team whilst Uni.'s sole representative, Ben Hilfenhaus, was told not to play! Those unfortunate odds were somewhat equalled by Painey winning the toss. The wicket was green and, with overcast conditions to boot, the option was taken to invite the Bay to have first use of the track! Uni. Legend big Jose, Nessie and Thommo used the pitch and conditions perfectly to have the home side at 4-37 at drinks, aided by Polkinghorne being run out by Scooter! I'll have to take the Umpires' word that the bowling was very good - by the time I got to the ground it was 4-50! A stand of 50 odd between Travis Birt and Xavier Doherty looked to have turned the tables the Bay's way but Josh's re-introduction and the mesmeric Beany confusing the batsmen (as ever) saw wickets tumble with little threat of the Bay amassing a big total. One of the stranger dismissals to be seen anywhere was off Beany's bowling - the ball hit back firmly, Beany got a hand to it and the ball then lobbed to Scooter at mid-off! Great team-work again from the guys? Thommo cleaned up the tail and the Bay et. al. were all out 34 minutes before tea. The wicket was surely better now, the sun was out and Lockdog and the skipper strode to the crease for a short stint which, aided by numerous no-balls' from a State contracted quick, was succesfully seen off. Painey didn't last long after tea, cutting a ball in the air to be caught at point. The Dog had played and missed at a few but then hit his straps. Joined by Kingo the pair took the score onwards. Another delightfully weird play - Kingo tried to pull a ball and got a top edge. At first I thought it had flown over the slips then thought that it was heading straight to the 'keeper or slips only for the ball to head straight back down with Kingo ducking (why - he's wearing a helmet) and the ball just missing him. If it had hit him on the head and then bounced onto the stumps it would have rated a ten for unusual dismissals. He was out shortly afterwards to a more normal variety of losing your wicket, the Dog was now hitting sixes into the large hedge over point and mid-off and brought up his 50 (which was applauded - has there been a change of rules?). Rhett was adjudged lbw to Doherty, Bakesy was hit (hope he's ok Hilary) and then left a ball (no pun intended) and was bowled. Richie carried on where Rhett had left off and hit some glorious shots before being departing with a lengthy look at the pitch (it was by now a lighter shade of green) and Sharmo and Scooter moved the score along before stumps were drawn at 6.20! The late finish was caused in no small part by the Bay bowling 19 no-balls (5 of which were scored off). The Uni. players wouldn't have minded though - with Thommo, Matty, Nessie and even Beany in his current form still to bat a big lead by lunch next Saturday could see the 10 points still a distinct possibility.
