Report:: (by Steve Kerr)
Round 3 upon us so quickly! Like all clubs rd.1 didn't happen, Uni. were fortunate to get a hit (and unfortunately a hiding) in rd.2 yesterday (that made 2 clubs
having an outing after two rounds) and fronted up at Queenborough for round 3. Three rounds (of 14) all rostered within eight days of the start of the season -
I think I should be diplomatic and not expand on that.
Making a lengthy trip to get to the game on time I found that I could have slept in - for four hours at least! The weather forecast was not good (they always err on
the pessimistic side after all) but arising early to brilliant sunshine with not a cloud in the sky this scribe headed off early to prepare for the game. Upon arrival at the
ground all of the clothes that could (decently) be removed had been so. Absoutely brilliant sunshine, my first sunburn of the year within a couple of hours but, no
signs of an imminent cricket match?
Making my way to the centre to see the wicket (and join 1 Umpire, 1 pigeon and 1 under 7 cricketer) I was pointed to 1 wet spot. I won't go any further along
that line but, joined by several of the players (who had all played in the UK on worse wickets week in, week out) asked why the game wasn't happening! The
groundsman went home for lunch, the pitch was expected every hour and finally it was agreed that the game should be 30 overs each, starting at 2.25.
Just before a short a report of the short game I'd add these obsevations - 23 of 24 players were happy to play and the two Umpires were wary of being sued for
the game to go ahead. No problems with the Umpire's decision - they've been given a directive.
The game - 30 overs each. Nessy opened from the southern end and ran up 3 maidens in a row. Brad from the northern end (that's the wet spot end) but couldn't
find any firm ground and was replaced by Jose, off eight paces, as would always have been the option for anyone anyway! SHSB lost wickets regurlary,
Tom Roach
had another First Grade bowl (4 off first ball, a no-ball and that was the end of Tom), Beany bowled his 6 overs and continued to baffle all of the batsmen. With the
exception of Travis Little the Bay seemed to be in a Twenty20 mode.
Scooter wasn't about to complain and picked up 4 wickets! Jose finished them off - middle
stump.
114 to win! Painey and Scooter to open. Carbon copy of the first innings - Painey faces - a maiden. Scooter faces Matthews for the scond over. I've scored
many a game and will always remember a Dave Higgings' 18 ball over (Bruny Island v. Woodbridge C Grade). Scooter had to face a similar over! After watching
12 balls he finally had one to hit - which unfortunately he guided to third slip!
Enter Nessie (the Uni. skipper always one for parallel thinking) and the two took
Uni. to a nine wicket win!
It was all over in 17 overs (4 of which were wides and no-balls)! Nessie played straight (and watched wides galore go by safely) and Tim hit anything loose through
the field, over the field or out of the ground! Nessie joined in the fun towards the end but the wicket was much better at 5.45 than it was at midday? Tim's
innings was a delight - watchful when need be and punishing when not. Four sixes, three fours and scored in 45 balls.
Capped of with a phone call (whilst in the shower) that Tim will be opening the batting next Sunday against NSW! A good day for the Uni. boys, a great day for Tim
but a sorry day for TCA cricket?
