Report: (by Mike Graham-Smith)
Old Hobart town was hit by a storm overnight. High winds and heavy rains (10 ml in 10 minutes at about 4:30 a.m.!) threatened to put an end to all cricket on the weekend – it certainly did in second grade as the covers were blown off the square at KGV Oval.
However, the covers at University remained in position, except for a small section on the old pitch, and the match started on time! Jason had shown great foresight in covering the whole square.
Big Jose claimed the early wickets of Gainsford and Matthews and Uni looked to be on top with Glenorchy 2 for 12 at the end of the 6th over. The ball was carrying through beautifully to the Remstar who took a catch at the wicket almost on the 30 metre circle with the ball still rising!
However, Uni’s early dominant position was not a good indicator of what was to come. Geeves and Butterworth came together and struck the ball sweetly from the outset. Bean managed to get his hands to a forceful pull from Geeves to mid on but the ball burst through his hands and Geeves had an early life.
To cut a long story short Geeves and Butterworth put together a 223 run partnership off 32 overs. They hit the ball to all parts of the ground and particularly favoured the area of the clubrooms. In all they hit 17 sixes between them and most off them peppered the clubrooms – onto the roof, into the wall and into the scorer’s box window! They batted well but Uni’s cause was not helped by inconsistent bowling in terms of line and length.
Glenorchy ended up with 6 for 345 from the allotted 50 overs. Uni ended up a couple of overs short but the umpires were lenient and did not penalise the team – after all 20 sixes in total were hit and a lot of time was spent looking for lost balls or retrieving them from the tennis courts or getting them down off the roof!
This was a tough total to chase (understatement) but Uni were looking to bat positively and bat out the 50 overs.
Things did not start well as King Holio was run out early. Scooter and Lockdog came together and put on a good partnership of 89 runs before Lockdog edged to the keeper for 46 runs in the 24th over. However, we were already well behind the run rate and effectively out of the match even at this early stage.
Other than a partnership of 51 between Bakesy and Scooter no significant partnerships were formed from this point on and wickets fell regularly. Uni were bowled out for 178 runs in the 43rd over – another disappointing batting effort it must be said!
Scooter batted particularly well and hit some glorious cover drives and a couple of sixes to cow corner.
Scooter, China and Roachy are off to the Under 19 carnival this week and will miss the North Hobart match. We wish them all the best for the carnival.
