Report : (by Mike Graham-Smith)

(Day 1). No play due to rain. As ALL First Grade games were washed out this now becomes a limited overs match next week.

(Day 2). Those of you glued to the E=mc2series on SBS may be surprised to learn that Einstein overlooked the most obvious application of his famous formula;

E (early season cricket in the TCA in 2005/2006) = mc2(more crappy weather squared).

And so it was that we turned up to the TCA ground under a canopy of dark cloud. Mount Wellington was also covered in heavy cloud and seemed to be looking down upon us in an understanding manner.

The weather forecasters promised that the day would improve. However, a quick look at the pitch revealed a wet patch on a length. Of course there would be a wet patch on a length!

The umpires would look at the pitch again at noon so we all retired to the clubrooms to watch Painey compile an impressive 45 runs against South Australia in the ING Cup match at Bellerive. He took Dizzy to the cleaners!

Painey got out so we went outside to do a warm-up. With the warm-up complete the rain started to come down and the covers were put in position. The rain didn’t last long and the new skipper Lockdog was soon in the middle for his first coin toss. He lost and North Hobart decided to bowl.

The match had been reduced to a 41 over affair.

Richie and Kingo opened the batting and things were going along fairly slowly. Richie was given LBW early and Kingo and Lockdog set about building a partnership. In the 12th over Kingo was dismissed for 20 runs and Brad was given out caught behind fore a duck - 3 for 30 at the end of the 12th over.

Bakesy and Lockdog moved things along in a steady manner with Doggie spanking a few lovely boundaries along the way to continue his recent good form. Bakesy hit one in the air and was caught and at the end of 20 overs we were poorly placed at 4 for 63.

Cowboy X came to the crease and Lockdog and X shared in an 18 run partnership before Lockdog was caught at square leg for 30 runs.

X chanced his hand early and chipped the ball just wide of fieldsmen a couple of times before finding his timing. A straight drive for 6 off Pregnell was probably the best shot X payed in his innings.

Huddo and X put on a partnership of 36 runs but then we lost three quick wickets (Graham-Smith, Hudson and McNees) to leave us precariously placed at 8 for 115 off 30 overs. This brought Grubb and Bean to the wicket and their partnership looked promising from the start. Grubby hit a massive six towards the indoor wickets shed and Beany played a couple of highly attractive lofted off drives for 4.

Beany and Grubby put on 48 runs in the next 10 overs before Beany was tragically run out for 20 runs. Jose came to the wicket for the last ball thinking that there were still a couple of overs to go and defended the first one back to the bowler to see Grubby short of his crease. Grubby was run out for a well-compiled 37 runs.

We knew this total was probably short of the mark but a spirited effort with the ball and in the field could see us pressure the opposition.

As it was North Hobart batted quite well, and although we restricted the run rate and had a rough chance of winning at various stages of the innings, the Demons always had the game in hand.

Dags was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 29 off 8.2 overs and Beany (0 for 31 off 8 overs) and Jose (0 for 22 off 6) both bowled well. Joey Hoang took his first wicket in first grade cricket and also impressed with his ‘Last of the Mohican’ slingers. Apart from a couple of expensive overs he quickly learned how to bowl tightly at this level.

North Hobart scored the required runs with 2.4 overs to spare but our effort in the field was encouraging and we battled the game out to the end. Oh well, maybe next week our luck will change.
