(Day 1). Whilst at another game on day 1 this scribe can only paraphrase the more learned in the local press and describe Clarence's progression to 278 in 60 odd overs as "pedestrian". In the 23 overs Uni. faced they had lost 4-64 with Thommo and Bakesy not out on 24 and 13 respectively. Not much of a report but there are some pictures. (Day 2). So Uni. faced a challenging day ahead on a cooler second day. There were a couple of unique occurences on this day: firstly it hadn't rained for two days in succession and secondly the Uni. First Grade team had four new players in the side from the day before! Fresh (very in some cases) from Tassie's washed out and immensly important Twenty20 game against Queensland on Friday night came in Painey, Lockdog, Hilfy and Nessie. Back to the Two's went Huddo, Grubby, Tom Roach and new recruit Greg Sharman. There's a whole new report on Greg's debut in the Two's (hopefully) elsewhere. So - 6 wickets in hand and chasing another 200+ for a win. Brad and Bakesy started cautiously (there were lots of overs to go) but Clarence's 'sultan-of-swing' Mark Colegrave kept swinging it. Brad took the option of charging until he was bowled behind his legs. And so to the strange sight of Tim Paine entering the fray at 7! Bakesy went and Tim was joined by the Dog at 8!! What could arguably be Uni.'s best opening pair were at the crease with 6 wickets down and still 140 to get. Both would need to score half centuries if Uni. were to get up. It wasn't to be however. Rhett got to less than getting his name in the paper before edging one to the slip cordon (hope the bat's ok - must be on a bat sponsorship deal); Tim was adjudged lbw when quite a way forward (and must also be on a bat sponsorship deal), Nessie and Hilf stroked a few and neither could hang around long enough to see Beany (3*) to his maiden half century. Trailing by 121 Clarence elected to enforce the follow-on. With 57 overs to be bowled it was an obvious decision - just another 1 day game for the afternoon and all the TCA clubs are now very used to them! So Tim and Rhett were back at the crease in their (maybe) correct opening partnership. This was an all-important session - could Clarence snare a couple of quick wickets and gain an outright? Colegrave came back (again) for his 23rd. over of the game and immediately gave Tim a large bruise under the ribcage, Rhett played a couple of nice cover drives and, when the massed (8) spectators were falling asleep things livened up! I must admit to asking Steve Maxwell (the ump. featured elsewhere) to insert some sort of spark into a game that looked like it was heading nowhere. As it happened he had to cool things down! Lockdog faced up to Colegrave 1 metre out of his crease and then charged as far down the pitch as was possible! A brazen amplification of Smithy's tactics a couple of years ago. Over and over again! Things got a wee bit heated until the Umpires explained the full toss rule to Rhett (half way down the pitch). Paine (TD) was out for 21, Scooter got to 16 before running himself out and Rhett and Bakesy had a field day against a Clarence team that would have been happy to have a beer and an early day. Richie dropped in for a quick 50 somewhere along the way, applauded by only the scorers. JA Bean was elevated up the list at the end and continued his scintilating form with the bat, and a strong chance of winning the batting averages this season. The Coach had been urging the batsmed to be more aggressive and they certainly were the second time around! Let's hope that they can continue on from here and do likewise in the first innings when it really matters. |
