Report : (by Mike Graham-Smith)

With our team sitting outside the four and with only five rounds remaining the scenario was simple - we had to start beating the teams above us on the ladder. This round 10 match against North Hobart at the TCA ground represented the ideal opportunity for us to do just that.

Joey Hoang had texted to say he was running very late so it was important that we won the toss and batted on a good looking pitch on a sunny day. Unfortunately, the captain managed to lose the toss for the second time in succession in 2006 and North Hobart elected to bat first.

Further phone calls were made to ensure that Joey could make it on time and we took to the field with eleven 'fit' players.

Joey and Scotty Campbell opened the bowling and the score ticked over slowly until Scotty hit the stumps and we had our first wicket.

It was blowing a gale but the quality of the fielding remained high and spirits remained buoyant in the field. Guinane was looking quite solid and Huddo was introduced to the crease in the 11th over to get him out. Huddo took a couple of overs to find his length but settled to bowl his ten overs straight. Wickets fell quite regularly - Curtain and Sullivan offered good resistance and Guinane continued to bat quite well holding up one end. Jubby turfed a hard hit drive from Guinane before he had reached his half century.

Scotty Campbell bowled his 10 straight through for figures of 2 for 37. Kerm took over from Scotty and bowled a good line and length and ended up with figures of 2 for 37 also from 10 overs straight. At the other end Chops Lambert bowled 5 overs and hit the seam regularly.

Joey and Toppdog bowled the final 10 overs. Toppy finished with the figures of 4 for 34. Remi chimed in with 3 stumpings and Guinane up on 93 not out. North Hobart had compiled 9 for 220 from their 50 overs and we had completed our session in the field 10 minutes early.

Now Remi had known he was opening the innings all day but somehow managed to not be ready when he needed to be - late, as usual! He rushed to put his gear on, he rushed to the crease managing to avoid being timed out and was out first ball, adjudged LBW. There are lessons to be learned here! His tardiness aside Remi felt hard done by with the decision and may have had good reason to feel that way.

Jacko and Jubby pushed the score along nicely before Rob Jubb walked across his stumps and was caught in front.

Jacko had a new blade and was batting beautifully. X strode to the crease and proceeded to run himself out for a duck. In the meantime, Jacko had taken a ball on the hip and was in some discomfort. A runner (Rob Jubb) was called for and Huddo and Jacko looked to be in control of things. Huddo had started in a particularly aggressive mood.

Jacko was looking in all sorts of trouble with his injury and, almost mercifully, was dismissed quite soon afterwards but he had batted very well for his 41 runs.

At 5 for 'not too many' we were looking in some bother. Kerm joined James Jubb and looked to be building a good partnership before Kerm pulled one straight to short backward square.

Chops Lambert joined Jubby at the wicket. These two batted superbly together. Jubby was batting with real balance and was scoring runs to all parts of the ground. Chops Lambert looked great from the start and things were starting to look up. Jubby was dismissed for 34 and Scotty Campbell joined Chops at the wicket - 7 down and still with 'heaps to do'.

Right from the start Scotty showed great cricket sense and hit the ball where fieldsmen weren't and took lots of short singles. In fact, from the moment Scotty took guard it looked as if we could win the match. It was a pleasure to watch these two bat together and their running between the wicket was the highlight.

Chops Lambert batted very well for 56 runs and was dismissed with 10 runs required to win. Toppdog strode to the wicket and the total went to 215 before he was yorked.

1 wicket remaining, a couple of overs left with 6 runs required for victory. Who was the man for the job? Joey Hoang, of course.

Joey walked casually to the wicket and tried to defend the first ball, missed it and was nearly bowled.

With that one behind him Joey was always going to swing to leg to the next delivery. He did and hit it over the square leg who was up in the circle. 4 runs and 2 required for victory.

Joey was n a roll now and was going to swing hard again. He did and got it high on the splice. It ballooned of the bat and looked as if it was going to drop on mid on's head but it just sailed over and the batsman got back for the second to win the match. You beauty!

The song was sung with gusto (great acoustics in the North Hobart change rooms).

We have some momentum now heading towards the finals so let's aim to consolidate our position in the four over the next two matches and reassess our goals at that point.
