Report : (by Mike Graham-Smith)

(Day 1). In terms of the finals race, and in particular the make-up of the final four, this round 13 match against Lindisfarne at Anzac Park was vitally important to both teams.

A cloudless sky, and the prospect of it remaining that way all day, is enough to convince any captain who wins the toss to bat in just about any cricket match. Indeed, these were the conditions that existed on day 1 of this match but to complicate matters the pitch had plenty of green grass on it and the pitch was a little soft as well.

The Uni captain won the toss and could not decide what to do straight away and asked the opposition captain and umpires for 5 minutes to think about it. It took about 1 minute to bite the bullet and elect to bat.

Having said that none of the 10 batsmen that were dismissed in the next 4 and a bit hours could blame the wicket for their downfall. A lack of patience and the eagerness to play 'millionaire' shots accounted for many of the wickets.

Uni had crashed to 8 for 74 before Darey and Scotty Campbell forged a 42 run partnership and then Joey Hoang and Scotty added 17 runs for the 10th wicket to give our score of 133 some respectability. Darey made 24 runs and Scotty ended up on 31 not out.

We had to show something with the ball. Joey and Scotty opened well and Scotty claimed the first scalp. The second wicket didn't fall until 46 runs were on the board when Tom Roach clean bowled a guy (batting a metre out of his crease) who left a full pitched delivery and hit his off stump. The next partnership flourished and at 2 for 93 we were well and truly out of the game just before stumps on the first day. Huddo and Darey came to the party at this point and we claimed 4 wickets for 3 runs to finish the day well. The highlight of the final session was Darey's 'Rosie' sledge.

(Day 2). With Lindisfarne at 6 for 96 we were 'in the hunt'. Some rain, which delayed play, did not help our cause as we were handling a 'cake of soap' after a few overs. Huddo couldn't grip the ball so the pill was thrown to Roachy. Toppy took the first wicket of the day having the opposition captain stumped - 7 for 124 with a slim chance of first innings points. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the breakthrough and the Farnies passed our score 7 wickets down or so we thought. The batsman who hit the winning runs ran past the crease to celebrate the win (when he could have taken 2!) and his partner having completed 1 run ran out of his crease to celebrate with his partner and the ball was still on its way back to the keeper. Remi broke the stumps and the run out was eventually given after much debate. It was out by the rules of the game and also out on the grounds of gross stupidity! I don't think that by-law can be found in the rulebook though.

Shortly afterwards Roachy bowled the old guy who wears his cap backwards and we looked as if we could finish them off quickly. However, the last pair put on 46 runs and we faced a 50 run deficit.

With high humidity and clouds in the sky batting was always going to be a bit tougher but we had to show more 'ticker' than we did in the first dig. Unfortunately, other than Jubby who batted for 2 hours and 20 minutes for his 20 runs and Smithy and Huddo later in the day, little application was shown again. One or two batsmen got good balls but the vast majority gave their wickets away. The rain came at 5:05 p.m. and we left the field for the day at 8 for 102 only 52 runs in front with nearly one and a half hours of play left.

To be a competitive finals team we must become harder cricketers. The talent is there and the mental approach to our game is improving. This was our first loss in a long period so we need to 'right the ship' quickly and sail into the finals full of confidence in our ability to handle pressure situations in tight matches.
