Report : (by Mike Graham-Smith)
Second grade were at home to Lindisfarne today. The weather forecast did not bode well for play but we were keen to play enterprising cricket - the weather could take care of itself.
The new captain, Mike Graham-Smith conducted a spirited warm-up and, more importantly, won the the toss and had no hesitation in batting on an older University wicket.
We lost Shaq for a duck early to a disputed 'half-volley' catch but then Rob Jubb and Nick Grubb set about 'righting the ship'. Jubby was striking the ball beautifully until he was judged L.B.W. for 22 with the score on 35. A couple of sweetly timed cover drives were the highlight of Jubby's innings.
Bakesy, who was returning from a spell on the sidelines due to injury, and Grubby set about building a partnership and what a partnership it turned out to be! Grubby was the next man dismissed for 78 off just 57 balls with the score on 151 in the 27th over. Grubby muscled the ball to all parts of the ground with great power. Four shots in his innings spring immediately to mind - a towering six from a lofted on-drive which landed near the apple tree next to the creche, a flat bat boundary over mid-on, a front foot pull whilst advancing down the pitch which went for six over square leg and a commanding cover drive on the ground.
Bakesy and the new skipper enjoyed a 21 run partnership before Graham-Smith departed for 15 when he hit a flat ball to long off and was caught by a juggling Waddington.
Bakesy continued on his merry way with Chicky and the pair put on a partnership of 89 runs before Bakesy was caught on the boundary for 94 chasing a 'boundary sixer' for his century. Three shots are etched in my memory from Bakesy's innings - a huge six over the sightscreen at University end which landed on the bank, a huge six which landed on the new soft netting over the turf practice wickets and a huge six which landed on the covers next to the law library.
Chicky batted well for 48 runs and batted particularly well after straining his hamstring halfway through his innings. Grubby was sent out to do the running between the wickets and ran particularly well. His fitness has definitely improved over the off-season.

Joey Hoang was sent in as the pinch hitter and scored 9 runs quickly. We lost quick wickets at the end and reached 9 for 296 at the end of the 50 overs.
We were confident of defending this total even though we were down a bowler due to Chicky's injury. Chris Topp, our English pro replaced Chicky as the super sub.
Joe Hoang opened the bowling from the University end and Browny opened the bowling from the River end. Joe and Brown Dog both struck early and we had the Farnies in early trouble at 2 for 2 off 3 overs. Rain forced us off the ground for a few minutes and when we returned the wicket had come to life, the ground was wet and the bowler's landing area was slippery. Bakesy replaced Browny at the River end and bowled three tight overs before his sternum gave him a little pain and he was replaced by Scotty Campbell who bowled 6 straight overs for figures of 1 for 23. Browny strained his side muscles (or back) and went off and we were left with 10 fieldsmen. Rob Jubb ran out the dangerous Dance with a direct hit from a throw that the batsman avoided whilst running between the wickets by ducking which landed on top of the stumps.
Hickster and Caddy bowled 10 overs straight for figures of 2 for 50 and 3 for 50 respectively.
All in all this was a very satisfying win achieved by 11 players with a positive attitude to the game and a willingness to play for each other. If second grade continues to play in this vain for the remainder of the season much can be expected of this team.
