Report : (by Rod Purves)

(Day 1). A 3rd grade game at Uni oval, and a Tassie summer day that was forecast to reach 37 degrees - was this an April fools joke?

Apparently not! On a magnificent summers day the Uni 3's assembled at their home ground (Uni, not Fergusson Park) to take on their old foe, the Kingborough Knights. Good battles are often had between these 2 sides, and with the likes of Steele and Philp returning from the Tassie under 17's it was sure to be another tough contest.

The covers had been left on until players started arriving from 11:15, so when removed the pitch was slightly damp from sweating, but given the day that was forecast it was probably a good idea to have that moisture around at the start of the game.

If you think we conducted leisurely warm-ups in the past, you should have been there for this round! No lap of the pitch, and people running around in wife-beaters and bare feet!

The toss was conducted and the Kingborough captain called correctly and elected to bat. Rocket had been warned by his team-mates not to return unless we were batting otherwise he'd be severely beaten, so he started to head for Sandy Bay road..........

Stuzos took the first over and snared the first wicket, bowling the opener after he left a ball on off stump! The Product opened from the other end and bowled very tidily but without luck. A couple of expensive overs from Stu saw him replaced by Rocket, who then went for 10 off his first! Gooders replaced The Product and was again tidy, but the Knights were well in command at 1/90 off 18 overs.

The skipper turned to spin (pun completely intended!) in the form of 'Dacks' Gray and 'Osama' Gerrard - brilliant captaincy if I do say so myself! Osamas first ball was tossed up there and the batsman tried to smash a drive, only to miss and be bowled! Wild celebrations then took place (mainly just Osama running around madly). Well bowled Ossie, and congrats on your 1st club wicket! Congrats also to young J Steele on his innings.

Dacks joined in the fun in the very next over, hitting the opposing skipper on the foot and getting him lbw. These two bowlers bowled tidily for 21 overs between them, as Rocket just let things drift along which saw the run rate come back to about 3.5 per over. However, wickets weren't being produced, as a couple of catches were put down and some chances just fell short of fielders.

It was a long time in between wickets, as young Philp and the ever reliable Mr V Allen built a 167 run partnership for the 4th wicket. It was a good lesson of patience and persistence for us though, and I thought we did it quite well. Given the heat of the day and the placid pitch, we toiled well throughout this period and never threw in the towel.

With the clock having ticked past 5 o'clock, the opposing skipper told his players to have a go. Gooders made the breakthrough and picked up Philpy (well batted), caught by The Product. Not long after that V Allen bought up his ton (that's 2 he's made against us now!), but was out in the next over, caught by the Enigma off Rocket. At 5:24 the declaration came with the score 5/282, so we were made to have a nasty little session at the end of a long hard day.

With everyone knackered, stuffed, shagged, etc, choosing 2 opening batsmen was tough. Blocka Wilson took up the challenge, and so did the skipper, as the likes of Gooders, Chooka, and The Product were all glowing red and in need of liquid in a hurry! Unfortunately Blocka was dismissed during this time, but Rocket and Stuzos (who has shown great patience and defensive abilities with the bat recently) saw things through to stumps, with the score 1/19 off 9.

A tough day at the office, but given the conditions I think we did quite well as i'm sure the Knights would have been expecting to score over 300. Special mention should be made of the fielding of Hughy Abetz and Paul 'Johnny' Howard, who were tireless in their chasing, with Hughy in particular diving and stopping many runs at mid on.

Partnerships, partnerships, and more partnerships - that's how we'll chase down this score. If everyone chips in and does their bit, then we'll be singing again next sunday night.
