(Day 1). Another fine day for cricket greeted the players of the Uni 3's as they assembled at Anzac Park to take on the Farnies. With 16 wickets falling for about 230 runs the day before, it was anticipated that the pitch would (as usual over there) be bowler friendly. The inspection of the pitch proved this as there was plenty of greenery on the surface, although it was reasonably firm. While the Farnies completed a training session for warm-ups, the Uni lads took the usual casual approach, particularly Martina Alexander who turned up on the stroke of 12!!! We welcomed Kunal Verma into the side for his first game, and with finals only a mathematical possibility discussed the potential of others in the side having an increased role from previous weeks. The skippers got together for the toss, with Rocket calling incorrectly and Uni being sent in to bat. X jr and Martina, after his 54* last week, opened the innings with the aim of occupying the crease for as much of the 1st session as possible. Our start was positive, with 6 runs from the first over, and scoring at a rate of just under 3 per over for the first 10 overs. X jr was the first wicket to fall in the 12th over, lbw to the opposing skipper with the score on 31. Blocka Wilson was slotted in at number 3, and after a few shots with his head in the clouds started to knuckle down and bat well. Blocka and Martina took us along to 56 in the 21st over, when Blocka was out caught. 17 runs later Stuzos was bowled for 28, and we needed to look for a consolidating partnership to steady the ship. Caddyshack and Gooders provided this after the lunch break, as they batted sensibly, ran well, and took full advantage of bad deliveries (and missed chances - proving my theory of a pre-game training session style warm up being of no real advantage over one that just gets the hand/eye co-ordination happening) when they came along. During this time the opposing skipper (who bowled for most of the 1st session unchanged) even decided he'd try an imitate his former Farnieland clubmate in Colin 'Funky' Miller and bowl offies for a while, but with no success. Spooner and Bray must have felt disappointed at not being used at this time instead of the part time offies tactic..... Bowling changes were (finally) made, and soon after reaching a well made half century Caddyshack was dismissed (by Bray - should have bowled earlier), ending an 81 run stand for the 4th wicket. Osama was promoted to have an opportunity at number 6 and looked solid early, while Gooders continued to bat well. Not too far after resuming from the tea break, Gooders was out for 42. Next ball Johnny Howard, receiving a promotion to gain an opportunity, was bowled, so the skipper had to face the hat-trick ball. A confident lbw shout was thankfully turned down by the umpire (good shout though, although struck on knee-roll playing forward from out of the crease was probably just enough doubt). Osama was dismissed in the next over, and we had suddenly lost 4/28 including 3/0! Rocket and Kunal held things up for a few overs before Kunal was caught at slip playing at a wide one, and the skipper edged back on to his stumps playing across the line. Wicksy and Hugh saw us past 200 before Wicksy was dismissed for the first time this year (by Spooner - should have bowled more) as we were bowled out for 209. A handy total, but given our improvement at the top of the order it was disappointing to see the lower half surrender wickets a bit too easily. A minimum 10 overs had to be bowled to complete the day, with the old Sultans of Swing taking the new ball. Unfortunately bowling half-trackers doesn't give the ball much of a chance to swing, so the score was soon 0/23 from 3! Gooders replaced Martina after he was hit for 3 boundaries in an over, and was promptly hit for 6 over long off by Rusty, and then had him dropped by Caddyshack at 1st slip! Perhaps we do need to increase the tempo of warm-ups...... In the last over of the day though the Uni boys struck, with Gooders again finding the edge but this time going to Rocket in 2nd slip who held the catch. Stumps were pulled at the end of the over with the score 1/46 from 11. An interesting days play next weekend should result. Some better bowling to put them under early pressure will be required to create chances, and all catches/runouts need to be completed. Note 1: Osama Gerrard was in fine form with his sledging, saying how we should throw to Waddingtons end because "the short guy isn't very fit".......... I can't wait for chapter 2 of Osamas guide to cricket etiquette! Note 2: If any of the Farnie players want further mention in the match report then feel free to let me know, as i'm happy to oblige. Alternatively, you could always write your own..... Note 3: On a serious note, see you out there again next year to R Dickens, who the Uni boys like playing against for the effort and emotions he puts into his contributions during the game (plus it's not as embarassing being dismissed by him, as it is by his brother). We hope the shoulder improves soon. |
