On a glorious day for cricket the Uni Kurds made the trek over the bridge to Farnie-Land, a place that has some pretty ordinary memories for us (ie the last 2 semi finals!). We welcomed Xavier Webb and John Gerrard into the team for their first games (they were picked previously but games washed out), and also welcomed "Fanta Pants" Jubb, Kermit, and the Crazy Horse back from 2's. Stuey A was also back for his first game of the year after completing Uni exams. Rocket won the toss and elected to bowl on a deck that looked like it might provide some assistance. Our preparedness for the game was thrown into disarray when, 5 minutes before the game, it was realised that Johnny didn't have whites! Luckily though X jr had a spare pair, but the XXL sizing resulted in many of us having flashbacks to MC Hammers happy pants of the early 90's.......... Wicksy and Stuey shared the new white pill and had it moving around both in the air and of the deck. Stuey (1/20) picked up his first scalp of the season in the 4th over courtesy of a catch from Girth at 2nd slip. Some good bowling followed, but it was also mixed in with some short balls and balls on middle to leg, making run scoring fairly easy for the Farnies, as they maintained a rate of almost 5 an over for the first 10. Kermit entered the attack and immediately bowled superb lines, making it almost impossible for the batsman to score. He was rewarded with a wicket in the 17th over (caught at 1st slip by X jr) and the Farnies were pulled back to 2/65. At drinks the Uni boys chatted and the focus to bowl well during the next 10 overs to keep things in check was high on the priority listing. Kermit finished his first spell with the figures of 1/9 off 6, and Topper took over from that end. Tuffers was soon rewarded with a skied catch held by Fanta Pants in the mid-off/cover region, and the miserly bowling at this end continued. Unfortunately the bowlers couldn't be as miserly with the overs they shared at the other end, and the Farnies easily maintained a rate of 4 an over through 30 overs. The last 10 overs proved very costly - 81 runs costly in fact! Kermit came back for an over and was hit for 16, G Banger had 22 off his last 2 overs, and the Enigma had 14 off his only over, plus the skipper missed a quick stumping chance (no photo this time), as not enough balls were pitched in the right areas, and the Farnies reached 4/204. Well batted to 'Harold' Hoult for his innings of 107. Well bowled to Topper for bowling 8 straight through the latter half of the innings for the return of 2/26 (he picked up Houlty late), again showing his class as a player. Kermit also deserves special mention for his miserly bowling. Our innings got off to a bad start with Fanta Pants trying to drive a wide one first ball and getting a thick floating edge to point. Kermit joined Crazy Horse (yes, Kibbey opened!), but the Horse was out for 9 in the 5th over. Topper and Kermit then resurrected things for a while, as they pushed and nudged the score along to 54 in the 19th over before TopDog was out for 26. X jr, Kermit (15 from 21 overs - in memory of Ronan Fenton!), and Johnny all followed in quick succession and we were reeling at 6/61. G Banger and Rocket then set about trying to gain some respectability on the scoreboard and put on 26 runs, before the skipper was caught at fine leg for 19, with Lambert out 1 run later. Stuey A and the Enigma then put on an entertaining 32 run partnership, showing a sensible approach to batting while still having a go at the loose deliveries. The Enigma was out in the 39th over, so it was left to Stuey (20 not out) and Wicksy to see out the last 8 balls, as we finished at 9/127. Again, a disappointing game. Our batting was again poor, and our bowling undisciplined. We've got a week off to think about our game, so hopefully we can turn things around and start putting in some stronger performances to keep our chances alive. |
