Beautiful Fergusson Park was the venue for the top versus bottom round 6 clash between Uni (bottom) and Glenorchy (top) in the 3's. With half the club on state duties or injured, Paul 'Johnny' Howard and the club mascot Chooka made their 3rd grade debuts. Johnny Gerrard also turned up for 12th man duties, with his first call to action being to lend Johnny Howard his playing shirt for the day! The carnival atmosphere was once again evident at the home of 3rd grade cricket, as the junior teams playing next door made so much noise you'd swear it was India v Pakistan at Eden Gardens! The ground was in pretty good condition, however the pitch felt like a dry sponge! Very interesting indeed, so the theory of bowling first was looking like plan A for the day. Unfortunately Rocket got the call wrong and the Uni boys were sent in - obviously M Hamilton (opposing skipper) has read the same "Captaincy for Dummies" book that Rocket has! Another great display of 12th man duties was shown by 'Gerry' as he bought a table from out of the changerooms for the scorers, as the scorers box was locked. Australias 2 longest serving 12th men, Brett Lee and Tim May, have nothing on him! With the side lacking some recognised openers, X jr and Matty Wilson (who looked in good touch at training) opened up together for the first time. The ball was swinging and cutting all over the place, but they kept their heads down and valued their wickets well, and nudged 1's here and there and put the odd loose ball to the fence to maintain a rate of 3 per over. Extras was also performing well, as the wide count ticked over regularly. Willow was first to depart for 24, with the score on 51 in the 16th over. G Banger joined X jr and they took the score to 70 before X was out, also for 24. G departed 2 overs later, and then Morro and Rocket fell in quick succession to leave us at 5/94 off 31. However Chooka and Stuey held things together and kept the score ticking over, putting on 26 together before Chooka departed for 17. Not long after, The Product and Johnny departed in successive balls, leaving Wicksy the dubious honour of facing a hat-trick ball (legside wide). Eventually 40 overs finished and we had scored 9/130, with extras top scoring with 28! Wicksy and Stuey shared the new pill, and had it moving around nicely. In the 2nd over the batsmen decided to take on Stueys arm at cover and go for a 2nd run - bad decision! A good throw was gathered by X jr (who had been given the task with the gloves after 2 poor games by the skipper!) and Snooksy was run out. 3 overs later Stuey snared an lbw (we hardly had to appeal before the finger was raised - obviously the umpire isn't a fan of Rudi Koetzen) and the Magpies were 2/25 off 5. Some short bowling followed, and soon Glenorchy were sitting comfortably at 2/56 off 8. The rain also came down, but the umpires decided to stay on the field, much to the bemusement of everyone. Darey was soon shifted to centre half forward as the skipped called for the Sherrin to be bought out, but the umpires weren't amused. The rain, and the introduction of Wicksy, proved to be a turning point though, as our favourite opponent, Ricky Martin, was caught in gully and was soon Living La Vida Loca back in the changerooms. The 'other' Quarrell of the TCA (ie the one playing 3rd grade, not 1st grade) then edged back onto his stumps, and on his departure tried some intimidatory tactics on the skipper at short mid wicket by pulling a not so scary face and taking a step or 2 closer so he could become more acquainted. However the game continued and Wicksy had 2/3 off 1 over, with wickets now tumbling as much as the rain! Wicksy then snared his 3rd, with Stuey taking a catch, and the Pies were 5/68. This became 6/68 when The Product found the edge and X jr completed the transaction. Darey (2/34) then snared an lbw with his 3rd last ball, and in the next over Wicksy held a caught and bowled chance and the Uni boys had their opponents reeling at 8/77. 5 runs later Wicksy had his 5th wicket, for the cost of only 22 runs, with a catch held by Johnny Howard. With the even darker clouds approaching, the last 2 batsmen did a good job of ticking the scoreboard over and taking up time. With The Product and Wicksy bowled out, and Stuey now in his last over, the skipper was wondering where to turn next in a hurry. However, the game ended with a lofted thick edge being gratefully taken by Wicksy off Stueys bowling, and Uni had won by 26 runs. All the players swarmed together and celebrated, as the REALLY heavy rain started to fall 45 seconds later! We had beaten the top team and mother nature in the same day - not a bad effort really. Everyone was summonsed by the captain to get to the changerooms in a hurry, as a copy of the Uni Club Song was produced from the skippers bag. It wasn't sung terribly well (only 4 of us had sung it before!), but bloody hell we were loud! While our singing talent may be limited, our passion and determination is second to none. 6 points on the board to finally start things off for the season, and now we're on the way back up. Well bowled to Wicksy for his "5-for", and well batted to Willow and X jr for showing application against the new pill. Back into the longer form of the game next round, so let's train hard and keep working on trying to do the simple things well. (ps G Banger dropped 2 catches!) |
