(Day 1). Unfortunately, not being present at the Uni. Oval, I could only report first hand on a game in the bush, which I won't. The similarities however are disconcerting! Team a bowled out for a very meagre score; team b bowled out for even less! Neither pitch was to blame (especially the synthetic one). In the Uni. game however there were two innings - and team a in their second dig continues the downward scoring trend of the match! (Day 2). And so, now being present to watch what looked like being a short day at the office, how would things continue? Resuming at 5-34 New Town would be looking at getting a lead of over 80 which would give them a chance of the maximum points maybe (given Uni.'s propensity to lose many wickets for no runs this season). The skipper was back from State duties (and Grubby back to the 2's) and Beany completed his over from last week. Joey had an over which had two good lbw calls declined, Bakesy replaced Josh and Beany Jo - back to last week but from opposite ends. To cut to the quick New Town didn't last long. Three top catches by Richie at slip, Matty L. and the best from Beany, again in the slips, a stumping by Paine (TD, having forced his bro to mid-off) and it was all over very quickly. They had a lead of 81 (not 79 as it said on the bloody computer I was using to score) - but it was over 80! 80 minutes before the delightful lunchen adjounment beckoned - we'd all be away very early? The Dog and Julio opened - and were both back in the rooms with the score on 6! Surely not again????? China L and the Pom (obviously still basking in the 1day series win) increased the score at 1 an over, played and missed a few times and saw us all to the delightful luncheon adjournment. After lunch the tempo increased and, finally, Matty brought up the winning runs and his own un-noticed 50 with a six to end the torment. So a win after losing on first innings. Gave me time to watch some entertaining cricket back in the bush whilst on my way home at least. |
