Report (by Steve Kerr) :

(Day 1). Only in Tassie? Whilst Tim and Hilf have been enjoying succes on the mainland with the Tigers those who have remained in this beautiful little paradise called Tassie have, in the last couple of weeks, watched bushfires tear through parts of Hobart with record high temperatures and, this morning, been greeted by snow down to low levels and a 12 degree max. forecast! But it is a Saturday and the cricket season! So, wiping the snow off the car I ambled into Uni. expecting to see the covers still on and not much activity but lo and behold things were all set to go! Couldn't last of course - covers back on (but only for a few minutes) and play got under way only 15 minutes late!

SHSB won the toss and invited Uni. to bat. Rhett and Ned got off to a solid start (one glorious cover drive from Rhett) and they'd reached 31 before the hail descended! An early lunch was taken and, given the extra half hour that can be played we'd only lost 10 minutes play. Rhett was the first to fall, edging to slips with the score on 39 and Ned was joined by China (only one this year). Ned's patient innings was ended by an LBW decision and Matty, who had batted cautiously had his castle demolished; 3-49. Richie and Sharmo looked to steady the ship and both played attacking shots from the outset.

Sharmo was going ahead at nearly a run a ball but Richie edged one into the slips; 4-66. Bakesy and Sharmo (both of whom like to get on with the game) did just that but only for a while. A Bakesy pul shot was a wee bit late and he skied the ball straight up - caught. Hudd was adjudged LBW, Beany, elevated to the heady hights of no. 8, played some elegant shots before gliding a ball to gully and Uni. had stumbled to 7-107. During all of this unhappy Gregg continued in his un-flappable maner and posted his 50. He found a staedy ally in Nick Grubb and a respecatble total appeared a possibility. Not to be unfortunately as Sharmo was trapped in front by the Bay's spinner for a well compiled 61 which comprised some lusty hitting and careful defense (on occasion). First Grade debutant Mark Fenton joined Grubby who farmed the strike as well as he could but Fenna jnr. was yorked and Josh Parker bowled soon after, leaving Grubby 76 runs short of his maiden First Grade century.

Not what could be called a daunting total but at least it was something? Uni. had to make a good start with its limited and inexperienced bowling attack and that's just what happened. Bakesy opened and fourth ball had the batsman attempting a hook shot which ricocheted off his shoulder into the air. Huddo reacted first and, diving full-lenght forward took a great catch. An even better catch (down in the book as going to 'keeper Grubb) was due to an amazing piece of work by Richie at first slip. A hard chance not taken but the ball still in the air. One hand kept it off the ground, the other pushed it even higher and with Rich shouting 'catch the ******* thing' Grubby dived and caught it! Great team-work and I'm sure Richie will wash Grubby's jumper for him.

So the team with the longest name in the world were 2-15! Something in the air (apart from snow)? Fenna jnr. had opened with Bakesy and bowled well without reward. Joey was introduced for only two overs, but it wasn't until the painter and decorator was brought into the action that Uni. tasted further succes by which time the Bay et. al. had reached 62. Travis Little posted his 50 and Polky was making a mess of some figures before Huddo took another good catch (at point this time) to remove him and give Beany his second wicket, but with the opposition within 35 runs of Uni.'s total. No more wickets before stumps were drawn just before hyperthermia set in.

A tropical 15 degrees forecast for tomorrow and the best, in reality, will be for Uni. to restrict the Bay et. al. to only 6 points. A better batting display will be needed.

(Day 2). Arrive at the ground, jumper off, wish I'd have worn shorts! A beautiful day for cricket. Uni. would need to bowl well and resrict the Bay et. al.'s scoring rate to avoid a possible outright and things began very well. Beany and Bakes opened and the painter-in-residense claimed his third wicket with the scores tied. Bakesy chipped in with another two and the Bay etc. were only 12 runs ahead and 7 down. The returning George Bailey and King then frustrated the Uni. attack, putting on 61 in too quick a time. Jo and Fenna jnr. had the chance to bowl at one of Tassie's best batsmen and Fenna in particular seemed to relish the opportunity, with only a couple of wayward deliveries being harshly dealt with - his was a good spell. The belated introduction of the specialist fieldsman Paul Hudson turned things around and his spell, with all 11 runs conceeded coming off a single over, brought the innings towards an end. Beany cleaned things up 5 minutes before lunch.

It had been a good bowling riposte from the Uni. boys, the fielding had been excellent (only one grassed chance, and that difficult) so now it was up to the batsmen to do their bit.

The Dog and the Pom again opened and first ball Rhett stroked through the covers for 4. Things settled down and Ned was lbw to Polky with the score on 14. The sole China (the other may even be back next week?) took 16 balls to get off the mark but he and Rhett tokk the score to 49 before Lockdog had to retire and head to the airport to play for Tassie 2's. Agreement between the scorers that he had retired 'not out' as headed for State duties but complications, not to be consisdered here, may mean he was out out! So it was either 1 or 2 for 49 at this point as Rhett, Andrew Downton and Chris Duval all left the field my fellow scorer with the computer raced around trying to identify the Bay's replacements and update the players! Quite a lengthy delay, all sorted out and two new bowlers to trundle in!

Now - I've coached, umpired, scored or watched all sorts of games over the years. Under 12's, Vacation, School, bush of all grades, TCA of all grades but what was to unfold I have never, ever, previously witnessed. From 1 (or 2) for 49 the Bay bowled nine consecutive maidens and took 5-0 (that's 5 wickets for zero runs) to reduce Uni. to 6 (or 7) for 49! At one point their diminutive U19 spinner had the figures of 3 overs, 3 maidens 3-0 (including replacement player Tim Paine)! With all due respect to Felix he isn't Murali (or maybe he will be?), Marshal works with the State squad but isn't actually in it. Bakesy was at the other end through all of this mayhem and I'd love to know his thoughts.

Far from saving an innings defeat it was now a question of making the Bay et. al. having to bat again. Enter the painter and decorator who surpassed his first innings display of strokes (not of the brush) variety and single-handedly broke the shackles. I've run out of superlatives for Beany's batting and his late cut off Marshal was not straight out of a text book it was should be the one in all of them. Having seen Bakesy attempt a pull only to be through the shot early he tried the same shot, but was late and caught. The spinner with 3-5 was replaced by the skipper (a bit harsh I reckon), Bakesy and Polky seemed to be enjoying some eye-contact and with Fenna jnr. saw Uni. past the Bay's total. However Fenna and Josh were dismissed leaving the Bay et. al. with just 14 runs for outright victory. Which they achieved with ease of course.
