Report (by Steve Kerr):
The return of skipper Lockdog and Beany from the Cox Plate (which some other nag won) and Bakesy from welding duties elsewhere saw a greatly strengthened Two's in action. The forecast was set
far from fair - would we see the D/L system in action for the first time in TCA history?
As per normal the BOM got it all wrong and a bright, sunny day welcomed the masses to the game. As it was Rememberance Day there was a minute's silence at 11.00 and play would start at 5 past. Or
then again maybe not! As the Coach's son-in-law was marking his run-up to open the day's proceedings he noticed a wet spot. Now as are most males he's not keen on them and called the Umpires to
investigate. It soon became apparent that the irrigation system had sprung yet another leak and the earth was moving (so to speak). An area about half a metre's diameter was resembling a bog! Much debate,
sawdust just got soaked, and, barring bringing in an excavator, plumber, cement or whatever there was nothing that could be done.
The debate now turned to whether the game would be called of or not! The bog wasn't in a bowler's run-up; in front of second slip to a left hander facing a quick. Much to-ing and fro-ing, opinions expressed, and
finally sanity reigned and the game got under way at 11.30. As it turned out the wet spot was never stepped in, the ball never landed in it etc. etc. But jeez it was big by the end of play!
To the game. Uni. won the toss again and batted. Ned had Lockdog back as his opening partner and the game began as an action replay of last week's. Rhett played the shots whilst Ned was solid and, at the
first drinks break (with fewer complaints this week about the drinks themselves) Uni were about 50 without loss. Another safe and steady start. North rang the bowling changes but the Dog was in fine form,
finding the boundary at all areas of the ground. Ned was first to go to a full toss and a good catch, bringing last week's oh-so-near centurion to the wicket. Matty began a wee bit scratchily but then clicked
into the form from last week. The runs started to flow more freely, Rhett passed his 50 and was dismissed to what he'll think was a poor shot, caught at mid-off. A fine innings.
With forty overs on the board and wickets in hand the tempo could be increased. Graeme 'bat speed' Cunningham had the ideal scenario and didn't let the faithful down. Matty managed to run himself out,
taking off for a single that wasn't there but the pair had added 34 in quick time. Sharmo looked like he could match Richie until caught and bowled by JD, Bakesy didn't hang around oo long and from
a 'happy hour' position it looked like we wouldn't bat out the 50 overs!
All this time Richie played some wonderful shots. He didn't defend a ball after his third over - a short arm thump over long on a beauty. Jacko got a horror ball that didn't bounce, Grubby just lifted his toe at the
wrong time when the Tassie 'keeper is behind the stumps and Richie holed out with a couple of overs to go - 56 off 37 balls. Beany continued his effervescant batting form and with Matty Drury and Fenna jnr.
saw the total to 9-213. Better than last week but would it be enough against a strong North batting line-up?
Bakesy opened and, after a wide first up got a wicket second! North 1-0. The Coach's son-in law to the crease to join Dighters. Both are fair players and our attack is not considered to be the stongest of
the TCA clubs. The ball was flayed to all parts of the ground for the next ten overs and the run-rate at over 6. It will be a sharp learning curve for Fenna, moving from the 17's to First Grade; so far he's done
really well. Credit to the skipper from keeping him on - he won't learn by not bowling.
North were racing ahead. A shot from Dakin (I think), hit like a rocket, headed to China at mid-on. Along the ground, China down to try and stop it, ball hits a divot and the sound of hard ball hitting
hard head. Matty picked himself up, found the ball and threw it back! The last action (on the field for him). From this point on the report will become as blurry at China's vision as I didnt get to see much of the
game. JD holed out to Bakesy at mid off; North still looking like they'd win the game within 25 overs and, again just as last week, the next two bowlers would turn the game around. Instead of Sharmo and Jo it
would be the painter-in-residence and Jo.
Beany - a great catch by Richie at short cover to dismiss the Tassie 'keeper. Then a brilliant caught and bowled. Jo just bowled as Jo does and was rewarded with an lbw. The runs had stopped dead. The pair
bowled in tandem for 20 overs when North should have been enjoying themselves. At one point Jo had the figures of 6-3-5-1! Beany was more expensive of course - he's given away 12 runs! His next
two wickets were courtesy of guys not playing shots to his un-pickable wrong'un. The 20 overs that the two had bowled returned the combined figures of 5-35!
North weren't that far away from victory though and they batted cautiously (as was all they had to do). Wasn't to be though. A run-out and the skipper's inspired move to bring himself on (in an attempt
to raise his Fantasy team from the depths?) proved decisive.
Could have copied last week's report. Maybe not quite enough runs on the board to be happy but what a fighting defence of the total! Good captaincy (in many areas; short term and long term), good
fielding: but I'm not the Coach - hope to get some input from Reeks next week. Another good win, two of the more fancied clubs beaten in two weeks.
An update on Matty Lister. He wanted to go back on to bowl today(!) and was selected in the TCA team to play the State U19's tomorrow. After a while at the ground he was taken to hospital and had
stitches for the cut and suspected broken nose. I'm sure he'll be back training soon (and clean up the blood from the clubrooms floor).
