(Day 1). Lindisfarne won the toss on a very warm Sunday afternoon and surprisingly decided to invite us to bat. Sam Johnson and Xavier Devereaux, our new recruit from Launceston, looked solid and especially positive in defence until a lack of calling brought an end to Xavier's innings after he had struck the ball firmly through mid-wicket. Liam O'Donovan joined Sam for a partnership of 13 before Liam was bowled by an excellent delivery from the bowler Jenkins. Sam followed in similar fashion soon after. Harry Virs once again showed ability to occupy the crease for long lengths of time and looked in good form before he was just a little too slow in dragging his foot back behind the crease to be stumped. Chalerm Tuantab and Joseph Miller both received good balls to be removed without scoring. Daniel Luck worked hard before his partnership with Sam House was ended by another run out. This was a really disappointing effort with the bat, despite being 2 players down, we seemed to forget the basic skills required to build an innings and most importantly build partnerships. Running between the wickets will definitely be an area we will have to improve on next time around. We could not have got off to a better start in the field and at one point with Lindisfarne 3 for 19 it looked like we might be able to replicate the damage they had done to us. Joseph Miller showed his great ability with the ball as he knocked over their first batsman. Xavier and Chalerm followed suit by knocking over batsmen two and three respectively. However our joy was short lived as Johnson and Martin put on a near chanceless partnership of 137 to leave Lindisfarne in a formidable position. Chalerm was the leading bowler with 2/10 off of 7 overs. We only managed to take 4 Lindisfarne wickets as they declared at the end of the day on 159. We showed great character in the field and stuck to our task admirably. We had another good period of sustained pressure and managed to string together 5 maiden overs. If we are to restrict sides in the future we need to do this more often and for longer lengths of time. (Day 2). We got on with our task of trying to wipe out the Lindisfarne deficit of 120 runs. Our batting line up was strengthened by Jackson Willows and TCA captain Ben Read. Brock Houston came in to open the innings with Xavier. Brock received a good ball and was out without scoring in the second over with our score still on zero. Sam, this time batting at three, was bowled again for 4 and our innings looked to be taking the same path as our last one. Xavier showed great promise in his innings of 15 before he was caught. This brought Jackson and Ben to the crease. These two showed that patience and good running between the wickets is vital for building partnerships and looked set before Jackson had to go off to ice a sore hip. Their partnership of 72 was the mainstay of our innings and our other batsman should look at this as to how to go about batting. After the departure of Ben for 42 our innings collapsed from 3-101 to 10-127, only 7 runs ahead of Lindisfarne's first innings score. Lindisfarne reached their total after three overs, Chalerm having time to grab two quick wickets. The game was over by 3:15. We need to make sure in our next game against Glenorchy that we get these basic skills of the game right. Again there are positives to take out of this game: Ben and Jackson's partnership and periods where we dominated the bat in the field. However we are making too many mistakes at the moment, especially when batting and we will have to work hard in training to address these. |
