(Day 1). Kingborough won the toss and chose to bowl. No surprise given overcast skies and what would prove to be a ridiculously underprepared wicket. Uni. were reduced to 3-7 and somehow scaped to 127 all out. Only Matty Lister hung in for runs and Darren McNees posted a handy or twenty odd at the end. Yet another 5 lbw's at Kingston. Having watched Third Grade in the morning session (they're in trouble at stumps), Second Grade in the afternoon session (they're doing ok) I ended up en route to home to watch the last session at Kignston Beach. I didn't expect to see much other than a few fellow Uni. supporters but the wickets continued to tumble. Nessy got 5, Josh M bowled one of the best overs I've ever seen him bowl, Beany snared a couple between four balls and the game's in the balance. Back there for the start of play tomorrow. The result may well be an outright? (Day 2). Easy equation - Uni. need two wickets and Kingborough 14 runs to gain first innings points (and usually a place in the Final). Jose and Nessie opened the bowling and the big fella got the ninth wicket with the score on 116. Nailbiting stuff for both sets of supporters with the last Knights pair now at the crease. Nessie bowled his second maiden of the day and Jose steamed in for his third. A single, a dot and then a ball that lifted, got the shoulder of the bat and huge joy for the Uni. team and fans as Tom Coyle comfortably took the catch behind, threw the ball to the square leg Ump. and awaited the raised finger. Slight problem though - the finger was never raised. So back again to get the last wicket. A couple of leg byes, some singles and then an edge through the slips for four saw the Knights reach 130; the last wicket falling next ball! So the only choice was to score quick runs and hope the wicket continued to play as badly as yesterday. Twenty20 stuff saw Uni. make 144 leaving about 50 overs to bowl Kingborough out. It didn't happen and the game was called off an hour before stumps. THAT pitch : was a disgrace. Reminscent of the old Tests that weren't covered and became a mine-field. The difference is that the weather in the preceeding week was fine. Players from both clubs, officials from both clubs and the umpires all agreed that it was the worst they had seen all season. Ridiculous to have to play such an important game on such a pitch. THAT decision : being an ex-ump I won't call it other than a mistake, and we all make them. Players from both clubs, officials from both clubs and all those at the ground know it was out. Just a shame it cost us the Final chance. Most probably my last report for the Uni. website. They've been fun and I hope that others will continue to tell it as they see it - with a mix of fact and humour. |
